The Elephant in the Room (Bush 28% Approval Newsweek Poll)
Source: Newsweek

It’s hard to say which is worse news for Republicans: that George W. Bush now has the worst approval rating of an American president in a generation, or that he seems to be dragging every ’08 Republican presidential candidate down with him. But According to the new NEWSWEEK Poll, the public’s approval of Bush has sunk to 28 percent, an all-time low for this president in our poll, and a point lower than Gallup recorded for his father at Bush Sr.’s nadir. The last president to be this unpopular was Jimmy Carter who also scored a 28 percent approval in 1979. This remarkably low rating seems to be casting a dark shadow over the GOP’s chances for victory in ’08. The NEWSWEEK Poll finds each of the leading Democratic contenders beating the Republican frontrunners in head-to-head matchups.

<snip>

A majority of Americans believe Bush is not politically courageous: 55 percent vs. 40 percent. And nearly two out of three Americans (62 percent) believe his recent actions in Iraq show he is “stubborn and unwilling to admit his mistakes,” compared to 30 percent who say Bush’s actions demonstrate that he is “willing to take political risks to do what’s right.”

Former New York City major Rudolph Giuliani receives the highest marks for having shown political courage in the past among the current major candidates from either party (48 percent of registered voters say he has), followed by Hillary Clinton at 43 percent, John McCain at 42, John Edwards at 33 and Barack Obama at 30. Mitt Romney comes in last among the six leading candidates at 11 percent.

37. A little while back, well before the '06 elections, but nonetheless
after Chimpy's numbers had begun their slide into the 30s, a family friend saw an anti-Chimpy cartoon around the house and responded in a cult-like drone "Don't you like George Bush?". Even then, two thirds of the country didn't like Bush, but some of these weirdos still cling to the memories of October 2001, when (some) people still through the bumblefuck could walk on water.

6. The difference between us and them
is that they are only concerned that their leader's dismal 28% approval effects their party and their candidates chances, they don't give a damn about how his performance approval and his policies effects our entire country or how the rest of the world views us all.

Going down, sir?

Those who insist on standing with him are in increasing danger on two fronts: A) bush, and B) Iraq. Neither is showing improvement, and that's how it's been consistently for a LONG time.

I tell ya, the meat is growing more and more tender. I guess it must be the aging process.

BTW - check THIS one out, too, if you please. This one was a delight! Remember Thunderclap Newman? "Something in the Air"? From I think the early '70's. Well, something's in the air.

38. Bushy could piss in their mom's eyes
and some of these morans would still idolize him. I continue to be absolutely perplexed by the fact that they defer to him more than they ever did to Reagan while he was actually in office, and they LOVED him.

15. I will bet its more like a 25% or 26% approval -The margin of error certainly not in Bush's favor.
Edited on Sun May-06-07 12:26 AM by GreenTea
And Bush will not make any new converts, but will likely lose even more with his scandals, policies, agenda and republican ideology that's being exposed daily. He wants to bomb Iran and thinks his numbers will improve with a new war for profit and his greedy imperialism...Very doubtful!

17. But he isn't the worst....yet
His poll numbers show a regular trend downward.

He isn't the worst. Carter (28%), Nixon (23%) and Truman (22%) had lower Gallup poll approval ratings but he only has 6% to go before he reaches the worst approval ratings in history.

But with the overall margin of sampling error at plus or minus 4 percentage points, we are really only talking about 2 points before he reaches the historically lowest approval rating.

20. Carter boycotted the Moscow Olympics
That really brought his approval rating down amongst people who really didn't pay attention to politics and world affairs but were livid over the US not competing in the Olympics that year.

22. Carter low approval IMHO was more about the Iran Hostage Crisis
At the time I seem to remember more Americans cheered his decision to boycott the Moscow Olympics in this country. BTW, I wanted to :puke: when Rudy claimed in the debate that Iranians looked in to Raygun's eyes and decided to let the hostages go. We all know the behind the scenes machinations the Raygun/Bush creeps pulled to sabotage the hostages being released under Carter.

24. Whether the Repuke candidates mention him or not..
Bush will be there like a dark cloud over them. Imagine them saying they have new ideas and then pointing to someone with tired, discredited ones like Reagan had! The legacy of Reagan IS Bush. Bush is just even more extremist: even more corruption, illegal wars on a bigger scale, the religious right running the agenda more, more extreme tax cuts for the rich, etc.

26. Bush's approval rate falls to 28 percent: report
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
President George W. Bush's approval rating has fallen to 28 percent in a Newsweek Poll released on Saturday, an all-time low for Bush in that survey.

Nearly two out of three Americans -- 62 percent -- believe Bush's recent actions in
Iraq show he is "stubborn and unwilling to admit his mistakes," Newsweek reported. Just 30 percent think Bush's execution of the Iraq war demonstrates he is "willing to take political risks" to do what's right.

Bush's unpopularity may also be casting a dark shadow over Republican chances for keeping the White House in 2008. Democratic front-runners lead potential Republican contenders in head-to-head match-ups across the board, the poll suggests.

Wow - 20s territory in Newsweek now - while a low approval percentage is great, it doesn't mean anything if the people are view him as unfavorable start to ALL push for impeachment.

Why can't we see a poll that says all but 28 per cent find him to be mentally incompetent, is destructive and needs to be removed from office?

Schadenfreude is fun. Bush is the albatross around the GOP's neck, & they're not going to be able to get rid of him for 20+ years. I think Rove might have succeeded in creating a permanent Democratic majority.
