China warns of population growth

Chinese couples are only meant to have one child
China's top family planning body has warned of a "population rebound" as couples flout one child policy rules.

The widening wealth gap could lead to a rise in birth rates, Zhang Weiqing, from the National Population and Family Planning Commission, told state media.

Newly rich couples can afford to pay fines to have more than one child, while rural couples are marrying earlier, he told Xinhua news agency.

China has about 1.3 billion people, 20% of the world's total.

It is keen to curb its population growth, and the controversial family planning policy, implemented in the late 1970s, is meant to limit urban couples to one child and rural families to two.

4. That's confusing

there was a documentary on Discovery Times about the girl problem in China - there ain't enough. If a family has a daughter now, they are allowed to have a 2nd child. They showed billboards all over the place encouraging people to have and keep their daughters. National Geographic Explorer did a show on the lack of women and daughters who are turned over to the orphanages.

They also showed a documentary about how most men don't have a bride and have resigned themselves to not marrying. The women, especially in the cities, have their own money now and way too many men to choose from to tie themselves down. They are waiting until later to marry and some opt out of motherhood.

Something doesn't add up.

Sure, they call them "newly rich" but thy are actually a consumer driven class....which is new.

I also remember the "one child" rule which made for a bumber crop of boys.......

anybody still wonder why aides is an under reported epidemic in China?

7. Chinese society is patriarchal

Sons are more valued than daughters...that's why it became a trend in China for people to kill infant girls when they were born, in the hopes that the next baby to be born would be a boy. Dead baby girls were even found in gutters in Chinese towns, because of this sick practice.

And of course, it inevitably led to today's situation, of there not being enough women for the men to marry.

It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature....

6. Well, maybe this isn't such a crisis...

I've read that the Chinese are terrible polluters....victimizing their own people. They dump garbage, really nasty chemicals, right into the rivers. About 20 miles downstream, 200 Chinese people get sick and die.

I don't think overpopulation will be much of a problem. They're taking care of that issue themselves.
