1 dead, 1 hurt in Las Vegas parking lot blast (Backpack at Luxor)
Source: MSNBC

A backpack exploded in a parking garage attached to a Las Vegas hotel early Monday, killing a man who had picked it up and injuring another person, authorities said.

The man had removed the backpack from atop his car when it exploded shortly after 4 a.m. on the second floor of a parking behind the Luxor hotel-casino, said Officer Bill Cassell, a police spokesman.

The second person was taken to an area hospital.

Aerial video showed no apparent damage to the parking structure, where entrances were blocked while police, firefighters and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents investigated. No further information was immediately available.

9. Yes, just discount the dead and injured. They don't really
count in the big scheme of things. It's much more important to hyperfocus on politics. Surely this was a Rovian plot to manipulate the news and the victims are just collateral damage in the whole Red vs. Blue game, anyway. :sarcasm:

2. Mob Hit? Sounds like it.
A interesting variation on the bomb under the car organized hit. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the mark was massively in debt or a trouble for someone in power.

12. Nailed it!
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- A device left in a casino parking garage exploded early Monday, killing a hotel employee who picked it up, authorities said.

The man was removing the device from atop a car when it exploded shortly after 4 a.m. on the second floor of a parking behind the Luxor hotel-casino, said Officer Bill Cassell, a police spokesman. He declined to describe the device, but said initial reports that it was a backpack were wrong.

Police said the blast was not a terrorist act but an apparent murder of a Luxor employee. No threat had been made against the Luxor, Cassell said. (Watch as investigators respond to the scene of the explosion )

"We believe the victim of this event was the intended target," Cassell said. He said another hotel employee narrowly escaped injury when the device exploded.

3. Sad.
Moral to story: Don't touch things left on/near/under your car. Walk away and call authorities.

14. The Tangiers alone keeps them busy
If they'd shutdown that place, Vegas would be nearly crime-free. :)

10. Sadly, that's not the worst news happening in Vegas
this weekend.

This morning's paper tells about a car crash in the NW suburbs . A massively drunk 19-year-old went thru a stop sign and broadsided an SUV, killing a 32-year old woman and four young children. Unfortunately this isn't likely to get wide coverage, because it's the sort of accident that can happen anywhere: no Strip location, no potential terrorist plot, just a teenager whose thoughtlessness and stupidity cost several people their lives. Three other passengers are in hospital in very serious condition.

What a tragedy! I'm pretty shook up about it; it happened fairly close to where we live, and I do a lot of driving with little kids in the car. It's the second biggest loss of life ever in a traffic accident in Las Vegas.

11. driving in Vegas
is the most terrifying have experienced. Just returned from looking in on 90 yr old parents there...

my how things have changed from the old days when the mob ran things. Had a pact to not take hits in Vegas as bad publicity and not wanting to get feds sniffing in their gambling enterprises. My Dad did an oral history for state museum about "the good ol days"

think this had to be drug related....heard on cnn victim was employee of hotel?

2 detained in Las Vegas bombing

By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS - Two people were being held in connection with a deadly
bombing at a Los Vegas Strip parking lot, police said Friday.

One man was questioned as a "person of interest" after being detained
on false identification charges, and his home was searched for clues
in the bombing that killed an immigrant worker at a hot dog stand on
Monday, police said.

The homemade bomb had been left on the victim's car at Luxor hotel-
casino's parking garage and went off after he picked it up.

Police said a second person also was taken into custody but released
no further information.
