Queen Elizabeth welcomed at White House

By DESMOND BUTLER, Associated Press Writer 13 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - With trumpet fanfare and a 21-gun salute,President Bush welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to the White House on Monday as thousands of invited guests crowded the South Lawn for a glimpse of the British monarch.

The audience laughed aloud at a verbal slip by Bush when he said the queen had dined with 10 U.S. presidents and had helped the United States "celebrate its bicentennial in 17 ... ." Bush caught himself and corrected the date to 1976."

Bush joked that the queen just "gave me a look that only a mother could give a child."

In his remarks, Bush said the United States and Britain, allies in
Iraq and
Afghanistan, were standing together in the war against terrorism.

5. How does an American citizen address the queen of England?
I don't think I could call anyone "Your Highness." I guess I'd have to use her first name, though I don't like to do that with people in formal situations. What about "Madame Windsor?"

10. "Your Highness" is used for addressing princes and princesses
A king or queen is addressed as "Your Majesty". IIRC, it is correct to address the queen of England for the first time in conversation as "Your Majesty" and thereafter as Ma'am (rhythms with ham - line co-opted from the film "The Queen"), but you would probably be fine with simply saying "ma'am". Americans of course do not bow or curtsy as Elizabeth II is not our sovereign.

15. It's not "Your Highness" in Britain
It's "Your Royal Highness". Everyone in the British Royal family, with the exception of the Queen, is address in this manner.

6. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad...
Frank: Protecting the Queen's safety is a task that is gladly accepted by Police Squad. No matter how silly the idea of having a queen might be to us, as Americans we must be gracious and considerate hosts.

18. I think there have been American Presidents
who could have said that and it would be a good quote.

But Bush would never be one of them.

17. don't forget -- she met him at the state dinner given by his dad ....
And she is probably thinking, "he's more than a decade and a half older and wearing a more expensive suit, but he's the same guy -- pity!"

Back then he made a borderline-rude comment to her -- "who's your family's black sheep?" -- and she told him to mind his own business. By the way, the Queen is extremely polite (I talked to someone who was working behind the scenes during a royal visit to my city ... all kinds of things went wrong, and Her Majesty simply ignored all of that and acted as if this were the most interesting and impressive place she'd visited). So for her to be so direct is like me cussing someone out and slapping him.
