US House votes to handcuff Bush on war funds

by Stephen Collinson 1 hour, 7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US lawmakers Thursday voted to fund the
Iraq combat in installments of just a few months, defying
President George W. Bush's veto vow in the latest tussle of a political feud over control of the war.

The House of Representatives voted by 221 votes to 205 to release 43 billion dollars (32 billion euros) in emergency war funds, but told Bush he must show progress in Iraq in July, before collecting another 53 billion dollars in financing.

"This legislation ends the blank check for the president's war without end," Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) said.

Bush "has grown accustomed to the free hand on Iraq he had before January 4. Those days are over," she added.

Interesting choice of wording for the headline.

House OKs Iraq funds in installments

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent 56 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The Democratic-controlled House voted Thursday night to pay for military operations in
Iraq on an installment plan, defying
President Bush's threat of a second straight veto in a fierce test of wills over the unpopular war.

The 221-205 vote, largely along party lines, sent the measure to a cool reception in the Senate, where Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., is seeking compromise with the White House and Republicans on a funding bill.

Under increasing political pressure from Republicans, Bush also signalled flexibility, offering to accept a spending bill that sets out standards for the Iraqi government to meet.

............

Despite Bush's ability to sustain his vetoes in Congress — the House upheld his rejection of a troop withdrawal timetable last week — Democrats called for votes on two separate bills Thursday that challenged him on the war.

4. Sell out?
Are you f-ing kidding me? This is HUGE! The Shrub actually is starting to lose his grip and he is caving in. He would have NEVER done this without having a Dem Congress and Senate.

We should be celebrating.

People tend to forget that just because we took the House and Senate doesn't mean we automatically control everything. There are still lots of Repukes on the minority side and the President is still a Repuke. But we won the battle at least when the Shrub says that benchmarks might be a good thing.

20. You can't exactly give NO more funds, can you? If you did, then Bush's BS line about not funding
the troops would actually gain some merit.
