Opie and Anthony Apologize for Joking About Raping Condoleezza Rice
Source: Fox News

XM Satellite Radio shock jocks Opie and Anthony apologized Friday for airing a homeless man's crude comments that he'd like to have sex with Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.

The remarks were made on their show Wednesday by a guest the duo call Homeless Charlie. As the name of each woman came up, the guest said he would like to have sex with her -- using language not fit for print.

Opie and Anthony laughed as they imagined Rice's "horror" while describing a violent sexual encounter in which Rice is punched in the face.

Washington-based XM condemned the remarks.

"We deplore the comments made on Wednesday's 'Opie & Anthony Show,"' XM spokesman Nathaniel Brown told The Associated Press on Friday. He would not say whether XM planned to take disciplinary action.

1. That's supposed to be funny?
What kind of sick individual would be entertained by listening to something like that? That's just insane.

3. I'm glad I don't get XM
if this is the kind of garbage they have spewing over the airwaves. Just like I'm glad I don't get HBO--the language used in the few programs I've watched from them is disgusting. And to think people PAY in order to listen!

7. Jeez Grammy, lighten up.
Are you from the Tipper Gore camp?

HBO is great...Yeah, the language is coarse, but people speak corsely. It would be silly to have a mafia show that had PG language.

HBO is the BEST channel on TV by MILES. If you don't like HBO, I think perhaps TV is a poor investment for you.

Now, threatening to rape someone for amusement? That's disgusting.

But I cannot think of a SINGLE thing that I ever saw on HBO that was inappropriate. Sure, the language gets coarse, but that's what HBO is for...to escape the ignorant de facto censorship of the overly sensitive, intolerant, hypocritical, puritanical masses.

22. This granny says
No, I'm not for censorship. But I'm also not for making everyone watch something, especially if they don't like it. You can watch that stuff if you want to. All I'm saying is I don't like it, and wouldn't shell out good money to get HBO.

Think of it this way---what kind of music do you dislike? Would you pay to have a station that only played that kind of music? Of course not! Well, I don't like cursing, I don't like violence, and I don't like mobsters--so I don't pay for HBO.

Now if they offered a premium channel with all BBC documentaries, old Sam Waterston movies, and every Sherlock Holmes film ever made, I'd consider getting cable! :)

16. This is NOT what XM is about!
You are missing so much if you don't have XM. I have 3 xm's- 2 in the house and 1 in my car. And I'm a 67 yr old Grandmother! Opie and Anthony are not 'xm'; they are on one station that is very clearly publicized on XM to be of this type of materia, similar to Howard Stern on Sirius, previously on AM radio for yrs. The remaining 200+ channels of XM radio are terrific- a music channel for every known kind of music, kids channels, talk radio of all kinds, news channels incl cnn, s-span, bbc, etc., religious channels of all kinds. Then there is the Old Time Radio channel, radio theater channels, and on and on.

You are putting your head in the sand if you think all of XM is Opie and Anthony material. You can block that one station or just don't turn to it. You are missing soooo much if this is your attitude or misrepresentation of what XM radio is.

30. I listen to AAR online
and my total commute, to and from work, is about twenty minutes. My boss has Sirius in his truck, and I pay the nearly $14 a month bill for it. I can't see paying that much money for so little time in the car. I'd rather spend the money changing my vehicle into a hydrogen hybrid, which my husband is looking into doing.

4. Pay radio, they can "deplore" all they want, and laugh all the way to the bank.
They're laughing like hell at this controversy. 'Tsk, tsking' on one hand, raking in the publicity on the other. Ka-ching!

Those guys WENT to satellite radio five years ago because of a stunt they pulled that offended the Catholic Church. They had two idiots go into ST Patrick's cathedral, have sex, and have someone else give a play-by-play over the radio. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/08/21/entertainment/main519365.shtml

Here's that blast from the past, from five years ago.

The New York-based shock jocks, criticized by Catholic groups for broadcasting a live account of a couple allegedly having sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral, had their nationally syndicated show canceled Thursday.

"Based on recent events, the Opie and Anthony Show has been canceled, and will be replaced by other programming beginning Friday," WNEW-FM said in a statement.

The station, owned by Infinity Broadcasting, offered no further comment. The pair had been pulled off the airwaves Monday, three days after the stunt was aired.

The cancellation was announced shortly after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell directed the agency's enforcement bureau to investigate the broadcast. The FCC had been flooded with hundreds of complaints about the show.

Opie and Anthony are supposed to be shocking and on the edge. Although this bit was tasteless, it is free speech.
Most of the time the show is funny and entertaining.

XM subscribers pay to hear uncensored material that is not regulated by the FCC. Opie and Anthony are on an adult channel that can be blocked. If you have XM and don't like O and A, just block channel 202

And fox news picks MAN-douche as an expert! This guy is a loser hypocrite who is barley on in any cities.

wow! I agree with hannity on this issue. :puke:

Please DU don't fall for this BULLSHIT. We should be fighting to protect free speech.

15. Calling for them to be fired is not violating their free speech rights.
Calling for their incarceration would be. They are in the entertainment business and the ultimate purpose of their show is to sell the advertisers' products. If people call for them to lose their jobs, it's a threat to boycott the programming and thus make the audience size and ad revenue shrink.

31. No matter what my feelings are personally...
about Rice or any other Repug woman, I will NEVER find it funny or cute or anything else to make a joke about attacking and raping her.

Rape is not funny or cute or anything else. Rape is violent! Rape is one of the most demeaning, personal and intrusive things that can be done to a woman...or a man for that matter.

There is nothing funny about it.

I condemn the remarks, but I oppose attempts to utilize it to enforce censorship over satellite radio. The remarks also certainly prove that no female, even the most dedicated handmaiden to patriarchy and imperialism, is safe from male chauvinism.

37. I think such a comment should be censored.
I rarely think anything should be censored. That's a slippery slope to go down. But in this instance, when the joke is about beating up and raping a particular woman, that is over the line. It is horrible. And it should be censored on the grounds of hate language. It is actually illegal to broadcast statements that call for violence against certain people, isn't it? They didn't exactly call for the violence against her...but it's close.

So I don't think they should be charged with a crime, but the comments about how funny it would be to rape and beat up a particular woman should, without a doubt, be censored in future broadcasts.

Rape and battery happen to way too many women on this planet for any of US to think it's a joke.

44. they'll never stop until it becomes economically unwise to stop
And it's not any different than any of the other crap that's out there. "Jackass 10: the movie" will make $75million at the box office. Girls Gone Wild will continue to make millions.

As long as there's a market out there for this stuff, people will keep producing this stuff.

Sure, it's unfortunate.

And no, there's nothing funny about rape. What's horrible is someone talked about sex and it morphed into a joke about rape. Rape is not about sex. Rape is about violence and power. Sex is merely the tool in that crime. For the discussion to head in that direction is indicative of some VERY unhealthy attitudes about women and sex.
