Former Ivy League Prof Sentenced on Child Porn Charges (Worked with the WH)

An Ivy League business school professor has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for having videos of himself engaging in sexual acts with children, ABC News has learned.

Authorities caught Lawrence Scott Ward, 64, with child pornography in his luggage and on his laptop computer last August after arriving at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., on a flight from Brazil, according to court documents.

United States Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said, "As this case demonstrates, individuals who exploit our children come from all walks of life. We will continue to be vigilant in protecting those who cannot protect themselves."

Ward pleaded guilty to charges of producing child pornography for the purposes of importing it to the United States, on Feb. 20 of this year. In addition to his prison sentence, Ward will also serve three years of supervised release and pay a fine of $17,500. He has been in federal custody since his arrest last year.

According to his biography, Ward has been a marketing consultant to many top companies and lists IBM, Microsoft, General Motors, Home Depot, Exxon, Citibank and Johnson & Johnson among his clients.

That punishment does not seem too harsh to me for the crime of abusing children. Then, they should hobble him, so future children can see him coming by his limping, and have time to get away!

Who's gonna help those poor anonymous kids, probably little Brazilian street kids, on those disks of his? Probably no one. They're probably living the same hell over and over with some other pervs.

Foley was a predator of teens, who groomed them but didn't, apparently, strike until they were "legal," while this guy is just a hideous LITTLE kid fucker. He apparently went to Thailand as well as Brazil to prey on children.

I think fifteen years isn't enough jail time. Life sounds like a better sentence--life without balls, too.

Did he have a directory labeled "Child porn here"? Or are TSA officials scrutinizing all laptop directories for airline passengers?

It seems to bring up some unsettling issues.

Are my political posts and cartoons critical of the Fearless Leader vulnerable to TSA inspection, for example?

If I label a directory "Leftist Politics" as opposed to "Miscellaneous", will it make a difference?

The customs agent said there were a lot of repetitive trips to Thailand, a well-known sex tourist spot. But my guess is also that one of his republican buddies fingered him to the customs folks, probably to give his contracts to a different buddy, or some such. They eat their own, and their all slimey as hell.

Since he had workings with bush, maybe bush got pissed at him for some minor thing he said, and had him "taken out" by all the dirt they keep on each other for control reasons.

I just don't think a customs agent would have taken him out without a "word" from Karl or shrub.

solo male business travelers are having their laptops examined and if they are password protected, then customs at their option will take the laptop until such time they are able to get in and examine the files

it has been a subject of discussion on business related sites

this guy was an idiot, if you are committing a crime, i suggest you don't make photos of it and take it thru customs and certainly not if usa customs knows you have a pattern of visiting thailand!

sounds like the man had a pattern of traveling alone to thailand, altho it seems they actually snagged him on the return from brazil

you travel internationally on a passport, they know when and where you have gone, upon returning to usa customs sometimes ask you about other trips and the purpose, esp. solo travelers, altho solo female travelers are less suspicious, solo females don't do child porn but it would not be unknown for them to smuggle drugs -- when traveling alone i have certainly gotten some odd questions from time to time altho my laptop is not checked because, ta da, i don't use one

male business travelers returning from thailand are angry because proprietary business information can also by viewed by customs when they open your laptop and start searching for hidden/protected files

there are surely ethical issues of business privacy and using the excuse of "all males are pervert creeps" may be a way to get into men's laptops and see other directories, esp. your hidden political directories

personally i would not travel w. a laptop that had ever been used for anything sensitive such as producing political cartoons etc.

why take a chance of being lied about and accused of being a terrorist or a child pornographer?

while i'm sure this guy is guilty as sin, he admitted it, and they apparently have the photos, i'm equally aware that it's quite easy to put outside information on anybody's computer and that you wouldn't have much protection against a false accusation, so why draw attention to yourself in the first place?

Yet when the Foley pagegate scandal broke just before the mid-term, there was some disturbing history revealed about some of the members of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Board of Directors.

Former Florida Republican Congressman pervert Mark Foley was Chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children and sponsor of HR 5749-which was a bill against some of what pervert Foley was up to, electronic sexual predation of children by adults.

An affidavit in support of a criminal complaint filed last summer in federal court in Alexandria stated Ward's luggage was flagged for a more thorough inspection for possible child pornography after a customs officer noticed Ward's "excessive" trips to Thailand, a "well know destination for people having sex with minors."

I know the search was the cheaper / easier way of catching him, but in this case it seems a bit too much like profiling. And what if he'd simply been smarter about it and hadn't been carrying? Would the gov't still have followed through and investigated?

as i said above, business travelers are complaining because customs is examining the laptop data of many male travelers returning from thailand

would they have investigated further if he'd had no laptop? well, how exactly? we're not allowed to send our own police forces into thailand and tell them what to do, if they are paid off or for whatever reason won't enforce laws against child prostitution i'm not sure what else the usa can do

it's certainly unfair to the average business traveler who has no interest in this kind of activity but the creepy sex tourist is spoiling things for everyone
