BASRA, Iraq - Shia militiamen attacked Danish troops in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Monday, killing one of the soldiers and leaving an armoured personnel carrier ablaze.

A Danish military spokesman in Copenhagen confirmed that one soldier waskilled and five wounded when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.

Local Iraqis gathered round the blazing vehicle to cheer and dance, one of them waving a soot-blackened military helmet in the air. Residents said the convoy had been hit by a bomb and automatic fire.

The clash erupted at about 1:00 pm (0900 GMT). British forces based in Basra rushed to support their Danish allies. There were no British casualties and the situation was brought under control within three hours, said Major David Gell.

More COPENHAGEN, May 14 (Reuters) - A Danish soldier was killed and five other soldiers and one interpreter were wounded in an ambush in Al Hartha north of Basra in southern Iraq, the Danish central army command said on Monday.

The army said the soldiers were ambushed by a roadside bomb while on a routine patrol. After the bomb detonated, the attackers used small-arms fire, the command said in a statement, adding that all of the Danes had now been evacuated.

Four of the wounded were lifted by helicopter to a British field hospital, it said.

Denmark has about 470 soldiers in Iraq, serving under British command. Six Danish soldiers have died in action in the country since the start of the U.S.-led occupation in 2003.

Denmark plans to withdraw all of its ground troops from Iraq by August and replace them with a small helicopter unit.
