Senator leaves sick bed to vote
Uresti is there just long enough to help block debate on voter ID bill

Sen. Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio, right,
ill with flu symptoms, leaves the floor
after his vote helped block consideration
on the voter identification bill during
the session in the Texas Senate on Tuesday.

AUSTIN — Sen. Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio, stayed in bed Tuesday morning — dizzy, nauseated, feverish and chilled from a nasty case of the flu — until he got an urgent call to run over to the Senate floor.

Uresti ran, sprinting up the Capitol steps to reach the chamber just seconds before his name was called, thwarting Republicans trying to rush through a controversial voter identification bill.

And then Uresti hurried off to the Senate lounge — to vomit.

Moments before the dramatic entrance, a verbal skirmish had erupted between Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and the Senate's senior member, Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston. When Whitmire cursed, Dewhurst threatened to evict him.

The tension followed Republican efforts to require photo or other forms of identification as a prerequisite to voting.

3. Strange how thugs insist on limiting gun control, but push harder and harder for vote control.
Just shows you exactly how they think.

5. Quitmire is still in the Senate?
He was the fool who got weak in the knees and left Albuquerque in the Summer of 2003 when the Senate Democrats left the state to block quorum for the re-redistricting. When Quit-er-Whitmire went back to Austin the votes were there for a quorum and Tom DeLay's re-redistricting sailed through.

Today's little spat with Dewhurst does not redeem Quitmire to me.

11. He's the dean of the Texas Senate
Longer tenure than anybody. He's standing in the way of of GOP efforts to kill democracy in Texas. He, and Mario Gallegos' transplanted liver.

13. The Dean has really tried to make up for that
I still have trouble forgiving him for caving in on that, but Whitmire has really come a long way in my eyes since then. He's really doubled his efforts to do good. He works really hard on criminal justice reform issues.

And yesterday, it was his insistence that his vote be counted, that helped buy us more time. He and Senator Shapleigh saved our bacon, while Uresti's staff brought him to the chamber.

The Dean has my thanks for that.

12. Hey ,we have to have a photo ID law in Ohio and it is awful!
Edited on Wed May-16-07 08:44 AM by peace13
People that we have known for years come to the table with no ID and they have to go home to get one. If you have a utility bill in your name with you that will count but a young person with a Selective Service card does not qualify. I live in a village of 5000 and this is real life! Think how bad it is in the cities! Peace, Kim

14. This is eactly why we are fighting tooth and nail against this
Yesterday one of our Senators, Senator Shapleigh got the opposition to admit that this voter ID bill HB218 wasn't about voter fraud. They can't bring up any evidence of voter impersonation. This has nothing to do with any alleged voter fraud that's rampant. It's all the Karl Rove national plan for voter suppression aimed at people who just happen to vote Democratic.

Bastards!

:grr:
