16 cities to go green under Clinton plan
Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK - Sixteen cities around the world will get financing to "go green" by renovating buildings they own with technology designed to cut carbon emissions, former President Clinton announced Wednesday.

Clinton's foundation has created an arrangement among four energy service companies and five global banking institutions that will result in major environmental upgrades in the cities, which include New York, Chicago, Houston, Toronto, Mexico City, London, Berlin, Tokyo and Rome.

"If all buildings were as efficient as they could be, we'd be saving an enormous amount of energy and significantly reducing carbon emissions. Also, we'd be saving a ton of money," Clinton said.

The planned projects include replacing heating, cooling and lighting systems with energy-efficient networks; making roofs white or reflective to deflect more of the sun's heat; sealing windows and installing new models that let more light in and keep the elements out; and setting up sensors to control more efficient use of lights and air conditioning.

3. President Clinton Launches Large Cities Climate Initiative
LOS ANGELES, California, August 2, 2006 (ENS) - Some of the world's largest cities have pledged to take action to combat climate change under the umbrella of the Clinton Climate Initiative, launched Tuesday by former President Bill Clinton. A partnership between the Clinton Foundation and the Large Cities Climate Leadership Group, the initiative aims to take practical and measurable steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Caracas, Chicago, Delhi, Dhaka, Istanbul, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, Rome, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Toronto, Warsaw, are on the initial list of participating cities, and more are expected to sign on shortly.

"It no longer makes sense for us to debate whether or not the Earth is warming at an alarming rate, and it doesn't make sense for us to sit back and wait for others to act," said President Clinton. "The fate of the planet that our children and grandchildren will inherit is in our hands, and it is our responsibility to do something about this crisis."

"The partnership between my Foundation and the Large Cities Climate Leadership Group will take practical and, most importantly, measurable steps toward helping to slow down global warming, and by taking this approach I think we can make a big difference," Clinton said.

Johnson Controls joins climate initiative
Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) is joining a global warming initiative being unveiled this afternoon by former President Bill Clinton.

The Clinton Climate Initiative announced a program involving banks and energy-services companies that is aimed at retrofitting large buildings in the 40 largest cities across the globe, including four in the United States.

The company was invited to participate in the initiative, said David Myers, president of Johnson Controls' building efficiency business. Companies involved in the project will be eligible to bid on retrofit projects that are designed to reduce energy use as well as carbon dioxide emissions.

Myers said new business from the effort could be "substantial," but that the exact impact of the initiative won't be known for a year or more.

Glendale-based Johnson Controls' building efficiency business is based in Milwaukee and operates around the world.
