Hilton's good behavior cuts jail time to 23 days
Source: CNN

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Paris Hilton will serve about half of her 45-day jail sentence and will be separated from the general inmate population, authorities said.

The hotel heiress will spend about 23 days in a "special needs housing unit" at the Century Regional Detention Center in suburban Lynwood, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Her sentence was shortened after jail officials gave her credit for good behavior, Whitmore said. Officials considered several factors in calculating the credit, including that she appeared for her latest court date, he said.

Hilton will stay in a unit that contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates, he said.

Umm, now just 23 days for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case!? Great role model there judge --- did her judge start crying as he considered Hilton's good behavior?

What's reckless is the double standard applied to those that live the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

2. Amazing, you get credit for good behavior before even serving sentence, and you get
brownie points just for showing up for your court dates! Sweet!

If she plays her cards right and commits no felonies this month, she may get it reduced to zero before her sentence begins!

18. That's apparently par for the course out there
Because of an overcrowded prison system.

I wish she had gotten two years.

3. I thought "good behavior" applies to the time you are locked up..
I guess the rules were changed because she is rich and famous?

5. We could ask Martha Stewart that question!
Edited on Thu May-17-07 01:15 AM by RiverStone
I was wondering the same thing --- any Atty. here have a clue how she got "good behavior" to count before serving time for her "bad behavior"?

8. I am glad you brought that up. Stewart had the best attornies
too with all her money but she was dealing with the federal court. These county and city courts are a bit different than the feds who tend to be strict.

4. I don't have much respect for our criminal 'justice' system any more.
Showing up in court once after having been absent for all the rest? That's good behavior? And what's this she's being sent to, a college dorm? If she were a poor hispanic who got pulled over for DUI and then thumbed her nose at the court she would have already been locked up for months in a unit that's shoulder-to-shoulder murders and rapists.

The rules don't apply to everybody. We're not all in this together.

6. "The rules don't apply to everybody." That about
sums it up. Look at what the Bush Crime Family has gotten away with over the years, and continues to get away with on a daily basis with virtually no consequences.

If you are rich, powerful, and well-connected you can get away with just about anything.

The rest of us are on our own.

10. I can't believe they admitted it
"Hilton will stay in a unit that contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates, he said."

"Hilton will stay in an area of the jail rich and famous people go to so they don't have to really experience jail," he might as well have said.

16. I don't think waking up to "Paris Hilton injured in prison riot!" helps either.
It may not be "fair," but she'd experience jail as a normal person about as much as Prince Harry would experience real British army service in Iraq - as a permanent target, a threat to herself and everyone around her. Because it does the jailers no good to have newspaper headlines about high-profile inmates being maimed or even slain behind bars because they were treated with callous indifference to reality.

31. It makes me sad that our prison / jail system is so insecure.
As the "richest nation on earth" we should have a dentention system that would be secure enough that NOBODY would get beaten up, raped, or killed.

If that were the case, then we wouldn't have to have "special" facilities for celebrities.

We'll see what 23 days does to the girl. It's like rehab or something.

15. The Hilton incessant whining and complaining campaign seems to be paying off.
How can she get time off for good behavior when she hasn't been in jail yet? I see they are also rewarding her for showing up at her court date. If I recall correctly, she showed up late to the hearing. Whatever. There are two sets of rules in this country. One for us regular people and one for rich people who are above it all. Ann Coulter skating on her voter fraud thing is another example if this.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if a regular Joe requested time off for good behavior before going to jail just for showing up to a court date. Haha.

20. Interesting, I didn't know this.
So even a regular Joe would get a good behavior time reduction just for showing up to court? I feel better knowing that.

This was her second time violating her probation driving on a suspended license following her DUI arrest. She is getting off pretty easy with the special needs housing and reduced sentence despite her not so good behavior while on probation.

Anyway, thanks for that info LostinVA.

21. Yeah, if it;'s for certain offenses
I don't agree with the low sentence, because it IS her second offense, but at least me and you would get the same sentence.

And, although I understand why she's in the "protective custody" unit, it still irritates me. However, I heard there's an even better unit that she was denied access to. So, that's something.

For the record: I LOATHE Paris Hilton.

17. It's because of overcrowded jails there -- I read an article about it
From the onset, it said that she would probably only serve 20-30 days, and that her sentences was a normal one. I personally agree it should be harsher, but it at least appears that she isn't getting any special treatment.

Look at it this way: she'll do it again and will hopefully get a longer sentence. And, she also didn't just get community service or a "28 Days" posh rehab sentence.

Maybe 20 days without a cell phone, makeup, and access to her closet will shake her up a bit. One can hope.

25. Good point. She will do it again...
...or will get caught at something worse.

I hope that once she gets in there, it's not as bad as she imagines. That way when she drives drunk next year or eats someone's baby like the dingo she is, they'll throw her into a real hellhole for a longer time.

If for no other reason than because we foot the bill for her jail time. Thank you very much.

22. LA is waaaay too crowded !
People are doing about 10 days on a 30 day sentence. Hell, she might even get what is called a "Lucky 7", which means she will be released during reception and never see mainline. She never would anyway, but she will probably do about 5 of the 23 day.

Man, do I need to play the Lottery !!

29. I wish people in this country would get over the false reality that everyone
is equal under the eye of the law.

We have a class/raced based society. The have mores will always get a break and the have even less will aways get screwed.

Until we as a people rise up against this bullshit, it will continue.

I refuse to get bent out of shape over the stupidity our justice system displays on a daily basis. In fact I take great amusement at it's absurdity.

The rich have always worked the system to their benefit. As long as the rich and famous are made to feel special, they will believe that they are and as a result blind justice will always be peeking out from under the blindfold to see which famous person they are going to cut a break for today.

Sigh, I get so tired of living in an alternative universe.
