Gore on running: 'I haven't ruled it out'
Source: CNN/Time

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Vice President Al Gore has not "ruled out" a presidential bid in 2008, he told Time Magazine in an interview published Thursday.

But Gore also said he has "fallen out of love with politics" and that he can advance his cause in other ways than the presidency.

"If I do my job right, all the candidates will be talking about the climate crisis," Gore told Time's Eric Pooley. "And I'm not convinced the presidency is the highest and best role I could play. . . It would take a lot to disabuse me of the notion that my highest and best use is to keep building that consensus."

Yet, when pressed on the prospect of a third presidential run, Gore said, "I haven't ruled it out. But I don't think it's likely to happen."

33. It's certainly not a no
My concern is that the Dems aren't bringing anyone of value to the table. Hillary is DLC damaged goods. I don't know if Obama has the experience to get things done. The second tier candidates, I don't think they have the oomph to get the nod. I think it's down to Hillary and Obama. As for the potential Republican candidates, I think whoever we get is going to be the one who plays the nutjob angle best, going for the base. I think Hillary will be their biggest asset in getting out the vote but I'm not sure if even that hatred can overcome national Republican fatigue. But I'm just not sure that either Hillary or Obama will accomplish much.

I'm still holding out for Gore. I think he could bring enough gravitas to the table to get things done. We need fighters in Washington, not wimps who will roll over the first time the GOP says boo. We need someone who will come in with an agenda and if the GOP resists, that agenda gets rammed up their asses and snapped off. No prisoners.

58. I agree with you almost completely
Definitely that we need a fighter. I would throw all of my support behind a candidate if they would promise to hold the republicans accountable for their actions under the Bush regime. I guess what I really want is President Howard Dean, but that's not going to happen. In the end, I'd be happy with Gore, Obama or Edwards as the candidate, but man, I just want to see somebody, anybody, start to fight back. I'm hoping Gore's new book does it in strong enough terms. Even if he does it from the sidelines, I'd love to see big Al stick it to these scumbags.

Also, don't count Edwards out. Last I heard he was polling very well in Iowa and New Hampshire. Also, if recent history is any indication, numbers we're hearing right now are meaningless. Pre-primary polling seems to never hold up once the primaries start.

69. Dean's the man
I was really disappointed when he lost out in 2004 but he really has done more for the party in his current capacity than he could have as a failed candidate. (I doubt he would have been able to pull enough votes to beat the GOP election rigging.) Even if he had won, I think that the GOP spinners would have made excellent progress blaming the Dems for the war. "Everything was going swimmingly until the Dems got into office. What happened? Why is it now a trainwreck?" In other words "We broke it, you bought it."

When I'm talking about Hillary or Obama getting the nod, I'm not talking about whether they're good candidates, I'm only talking about whether they're likely candidates. I don't think any of the others have enough name recognition to get the nod. I think it's going to come down to a battle between the two of them and then against whichever lackluster candidate the GOP fronts.

The thing that really amazes me about the GOP selection is that there isn't a single candidate in the lineup that makes me think "ooooh, that guy's a good candidate, he really has something to appeal to moderates and swing voters." I don't even see anything that makes me think "Wow, that's something the right-wing voter will find compelling." I think the biggest threat to the Dems in 2008 is fronting a candidate who simply cannot present a solid impression of "I'm the better choice" and leaving it up to voter apathy to decide the race.

I mean, Bush in 2004 should have been a textbook example of the kind of opponent a campaign manager wants for his candidate. There should have been more than enough weaknesses to attack and enough mistakes to point out solutions to. These issues weren't blah-blah boring rules and regulations stuff that make people tune out, this is talking about war, national security, and collossal fuckups. And even with all those strikes against him, Bush was still able to get within stealing distance of the election. It should have been a blowout.

I'm just sick of the political crap. These elections come across as nothing more than the handsome studball trying to get into the cute chick's pants. "Hey, baby, what do I need to tell you to let me get in there? I love you? I love you, babe. You want dinner? Here's some dinner. Lots of wine, too, gotta impair that decision-making ability of yours, heh-heh. You drunk enough yet?" And then the next moring it's like "Man, what an easy lay. Whore." Each cycle it's just another scumbag up there saying "Tell me what you want to hear from me so I can get into your pants." And each time we get fucked and chucked we keep coming back to see if the next scumbag might be different.

75. Why is it that we, of all people, are consideering a Hillary nom as a foregone conclusion?
She is leading in polls almost two years out, which in itself is meaningless, but more importantly she has very little support among the likely democratic primary voters. That's us people. We're the base. We're the hardcore. We're the ones who pay attention, and we're the ones who vote in primaries.

Also, let it be known that I'm an Iowan. I don't live there now, but I was born there, lived there for 30 years, and am about to move back there. Why is that relevant? Because Iowa, for some arcane reason, gets the first crack at the candidates of course. And I've got a lot of family and friends there, most of them hardcore democrats. The type that vote in primaries and midterms. And nobody there wants Hillary.

Hillary as the nominee is not a foregone conclusion, and it's not a done deal. Yes, the media wants her. The republicans definitely want to run against her (though I think they may be rethinking that strategy in the face of their lackluster lineup). And those two, especially if they work together, have an incredible ability to shape perceptions. But from where I sit in the reality-based community, Hillary will not win Iowa, and probably not win New Hampshire, and ridiculous as our system is, if she doesn't get at least one of them, she's very likely out of the running.

167. Iowa and NH are both swing states now.
Swing states will determine who wins in 2008, so why not have a couple of them have their say early in the process?

Candidates chosen by New York and California may not play well in Iowa and New Hampshire. Sure, we get tons of votes in those two states, but they are unlikely to leave the "D" column if their first choices in the primary do not lead the ticket.

That may not be the case in Iowa and NH.

Personally, I'd like to see Ohio and Florida have early primaries as well. Talk about swing states . . .

72. The Real Power of the Force
First why do you put the link out there and say read more when there is nothing more at the site than what you posted.
Anyway, Gore could bring the whole country together again and inspire us to be the greatest nation on earth. He would give us a direction toward peace and global unification working toward our highest ideals. A true focus for our highest good. Your country calls you to bring us together again. With you there is no question the Democrats would win hands down in the Senate and the House besides the Presidency (that is if we have an '08 election because these repukes would do anything to hold power which makes us all paranoid as to what they might try, especially with you running) and for this reason we pray you'll come back to politics. Hell, you already won once so come on Al, do it.

4. This Country Is Pretty Well Screwed Without Him
We're probably going to have Hillary forced upon us for the nomination. Since people are going to be pretty apathetic about voting for the repub candidate, she'll probably squeak by in the general election, and she'll probably be "selected" as our next president.

Nothing will change. Our country will lose further stature around the world. We'll become more divided, since a sizable percentage of the population won't be able to stand another Clinton presidency.

I think this country is in deep, deep trouble without Gore, and we'll just have to live with the consequences of having another president forced upon us by the powers that be.

60. Don't be so bleak
I'm no fan of Ms. Clinton, but even a corporatist democrat is better than the best republican. Things would improve under a President Hillary, just not as much as they could. Honestly, I think we need a new FDR, who's going to fill that role?

92. Hillary Clinton can't win
Republicans are drooling over Clinton's nomination. She is to republicans what George Bush was to us in 2004. Anyone but Hilary. Republicans will crawl over glass and hot coals to vote against her. Additionally, what issue does she have at her disposal that will get the swing voters fired up? She doesn't have terrorism or security to fearmonger votes in her favor like GWB did in 2004.

7. The Top Tier SUCKS!
Edwards is about the only candidate with the compassion and honesty it will take to turn things around.

Obama is in it for the glory. He's only running because he thinks he's so popular. He's not going to win the nomination.

We're going to get Hillary. Mark my words. They want her, because it will make for a close election between her and probably Giulliani.

This has been planned, and is now being forced upon us by the media and other powers that be. She will not be the answer to bringing this country together, or raising it's stature around the world. Rather, it will be her reward for being married to Bill, and who knows how long ago it was promised to her, much like the "presidency" was Promised to King george.

The future for this country is bleak. We've become a joke. Al not running will be the final nail in the coffin. We'll look upon Hillary and feel glad that we got a Democrat in the WH, but it will all be a mirage. The Monarchy will continue. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton. Perhaps Jeb will run next so the dynasty can continue.

53. We need a leader - PERIOD
This country has been leaderless since '98, when the VRWC succeeded in taking the power away from the WH. I am more and more convinced that since Gore was elected in 2000, his election, again, would go a long, long way to healing what is all wrong in this country. He may not want to hear it, but this country needs Al Gore.

that would put Nancy Pelosi in the pres. spot. She might be very good and we leave her in. Then we don't have to go through another upheaval in choosing a pres. who people are squeamish about.

If Gore wants to run, he'd better make it known soon and start talking about Iraq, negotiations and diplomacy. He will also have to make a stand on impeachment and be strong on getting Bush out asap, IMO.

26. I had a repuke friend recently ask me what Gore's
waiting for. He is anxious to vote for him.....believes he'd win "in a landslide."

Last week the rightwing "Parade" mag that comes in the Sunday edition of many newspapers suggested that Gore isn't running because he'd naver be able to build an organization and raise enough money at this point. That was music to my ears. Wishful thinking on their part and total fear that he's going to get into it and dwarf their sorry bunch of losers.

Run, Al, run.

He doesn't need to be in the race now. He can enter in September or October and instantly claim frontrunner status.

126. Statesmen don't win elections
Politicians do. The most accurate thing that could be said about 2004 is that John Kerry clearly demonstrated that he was a statesman, but Bush proved more willing to engage in sleazy, disgusting politics. Elections are rarely about statesmanship these days.

I think Vash is right... as noble as Gore is, nobility doesn't win. It would be most advantageous for him to enter late with lots of fanfare and popular support and just stage a final killing blow against the by-then foundering frontrunners.

I hope he does, FWIW. I wanted Kerry to run but since he isn't, Gore is the only other person I could get excited about.

135. Pardon me, but I'm not sure what this has to do with anything.
There's nothing un-statesmanlike about this kind of action. In fact, I'd say this is probably MOST statesmanlike. Here's a definition for you:

Main Entry: states·man
Pronunciation: 'stAts-m&n
Function: noun
1 : one versed in the principles or art of government; especially : one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government or in shaping its policies
2 : one who exercises political leadership wisely and without narrow partisanship

As far as I'm concerned, this is something only the utmost statesman would be wise enough to do. There is no good reason why he should let the other candidates and the media spend 6-8 months beating the hell out of him when he can let them do that to the other candidates and be all the healthier for it. And there is nothing un-statesmanlike, dishonest, or any other negative connotation about it.

166. thanks, janx, I love this part
snip: When I asked Gore why he hasn’t dismissed all the speculation by issuing a Shermanesque refusal to stand, as he did in 2002, Gore said, "Having spent 30 years as part of the political dialogue, I don’t know why a 600-day campaign is taken as a given, and why people who aren’t in it 600 days out for the convenience of whatever brokers want to close the door and narrow the field and say, ‘This is it, now let’s place your bets’ — If they want to do that, fine. I don’t have to play that game."

Good he doesn't want to play that game. He could sneak in but he has to start talking about Iraq, peace, Gonzo, impeachment and the other improtant issues of the day.

I know, I know, Al that you did win the popular vote (and won Florida, too). But the Court put in you know who, and look what has happened.

Everything you stated in the debates were true. You talked about saving social security, keeping the budget surplus by not passing irresponsible tax cuts, and saving the environment from global warming.

Yes, the lock box analogy was a little silly, but the message was spot on. There are many, many folks who think you deserve a second chance.

You really did win in 2000. You would certainly win now. Run, Al, run!!!

And I couldn't agree with him more and believe he is doing the right thing. I fully intend to read his book, pass it on to my child as I have my books on Thomas Jefferson, and do all I can to be that involved citizen. There is no reason for him to go back to that muck if he sees that the people of this country cannot even stand up for what is right themselves. Those who simply get on their knees in front of him and beg him are not doing a service to America unless they are willing to get up off their knees and stand beside him to work for this Democracy.

About the worst thing anyone can say about him is that he may well be more valuable now doing what he's already doing. (Well, okay, there was that rather unfortunate choice for a VP candidate, but I don't think that was entirely his decision.)

Al Gore could serve this country and the world better as President. There is so much wrong with this country after the Bushes have damaged us in every way, from the climate crisis to the critical damage done to the Constitution. Just pick a subject and it needs fixing, saved or re-directed and it will take herculean energy and an honest, highly intelligent, and dedicated public servant that Al Gore has always been. Gore and Wesley Clark are the ones that America needs at this time.

Why does everybody think Clinton's already got the nomination? YOU have the power to keep that from happening. Fuck, if you give up now you might create a self-fulfilling prophecy, but regardless of what the media says or wants, it's in OUR hands. We are not some looney fringe. We are the fucking base people. If you don't want Clinton, do your duty and vote for who you do want. It really is that simple.

78. I'd have to agree with Gore about "fallen out of love with politics"
And then to go on to say:

"If I do my job right, all the candidates will be talking about the climate crisis,"

I'd have to say that he has moved environmental issues five years ahead again that the Bush administration has pushed back 40 plus years to the standards and priority that it was in the 60's. With his popularity and clout throughout this world I see good things happening with environmental issues versus if he does win the Whitehouse and has to spread his priorities thin when he inherits the total mess that this administration leaves behind. Poor health care, low paying or no jobs, a shit hole in Iraq, corruption out the wazoo, etc.

Would love to see it happen but I think he's doing great things now without having his hands tied.

Per the TIME article I posted today. And I too agree. A man with his resources and access to all business leaders and world leaders in the world, who can devote his time and passion to this at his own pace for as long as he wishes has true freedom that should not be given up.

82. I think he meant what he said about not wanting a 600-day campaign.
And since he's the ONLY candidate (or possible candidate) who doesn't need to start early, why on earth should he? It would only give the corporate media more time to crank up the old War on Gore spin machine.

By keeping everyone guessing until the last possible minute, he makes people focus on WHY he'd be a great president, instead of just talking about the "horse race." I can tell you it's working with me: I just pre-ordered his new book plus Earth in the Balance and An Inconvenient Truth, neither of which I've read before. I wonder how many other people are also playing catch-up? Releasing The Assault on Reason is also campaigning, just in a different (and better) way than we're used to.

88. You've "fallen out of love with politics," and that's why you should run.
We don't need another selfish, narcissistic megalomaniac in the White House. We don't need another political machine that exists to serve itself. We need some honest, competent, sincere, experienced citizen snatched from the street willing to serve their country. (I also want to draft Byron Dorgan. He's also perfect for the job because he's not running either.)

Dear President Gore, run because your country needs you. Your "highest and best use" is to make climate change a top priority. But Mr. Gore, the last poll I saw had gasoline prices - not climate change - as people's second concern (Iraq was first). If you want to move the nation, you will have to be President. Nothing else will do. Run, Al, run!

91. To run: "I can't say because I'm not looking for it."
Edited on Thu May-17-07 03:24 PM by NastyDiaper

What it would take, specifically ?

Gore: "I can't say because I'm not looking for it. But I guess I would know it if I saw it. I haven't ruled it out. But I don't think it's likely to happen."

We have to build the platform and show it to him.

While I'm listening to the other candidates. Whom I like. I'm not the least bit shy about sharing my number one choice.

Odd in a way. The very reason for my interest in the race this early is to help reserve a spot for Al Gore. Show interest and keep him in the polls. Just in case.

Finally I really got to hand it to the DU. Might seem a bit off-topic but our response to the Keith Olbermann "Special Comment" last summer kinda gave me a sense of our power.
We seem to be out in front, and in reading through this thread I hope we are :toast:.

99. I think Al should bring attention to the rising CO2 levels instead
of climate change. Saying "climate change" can be twisted and dismissed too easily by the wingnuts. C02 levels on the other hand going outside the limits of anything the Earth has had as far back as we know makes a better argument (IMHO).

When he showed the CO2 graph in his movie it made more of an impact on me than the climate change arguement. Climate changes all the time and we don't understand it. We have a big blaring example of C02 getting too high in Venus right next door. The sheeple can see it better that way.

I suspect he also knows that and is somewhat disappointed about that as well. Can you imagine what went through his head in I think it was Buffalo, when that college student got down on her knee and bowed her head like she was at some freeper religious revival and could only muster that she would vote for HIM? I actually think she was put up to it, but that's another story. That after all his words about THEM being the change she couldn't even tell him she would do that, but that it was still HIS duty to do it for her? That showed him right there that the words he had been speaking fell on totally deaf ears. If only we could muster the fervor displayed for people taking action themselves that we see in people begging others and waiting for others to do it for them, we might not be in this mess to begin with. Oh well...

118. My guess is
Gore will announce in Sept. Don't forget he is up for the Nobel Peace prize, to be announced in October. He may be timing his announcement close to that announcement so that it doesn't influence the Nobel nomination one way or the other. The next POTUS has to be strong enough to deal with the mess Bush will leave, plus lead the world in a cooperative effort to deal with global warming. Gore is just the man for the job. I would love a Gore/Edwards ticket. After all these depressing years with the Bush regime, what a boost to the world that would be!

130. Oh please, stop your character assaults
NO PRESIDENT HAS DONE IT IN THIRTY YEARS because of the very conditions Mr. Gore is decscribing in his book. It has nothing to do with him and YOU KNOW IT. Please then explain why Clinton didn't
do it then if it is so easy. I'll wait. Until then, stop with your false persecution. Mr. Gore himself has stated his wariness about the effectiveness of serving in that capacity at this juncture. It was because of the last thirty years that he even wrote this book according to his own words, or didn't you read what he stated in the article? Perhaps you should actually read his own words before you once again embarrass yourself here.

175. You're kidding, right? Richardson isn't exactly a big draw.
I would never vote for a ticket with Bill "Gonzales gets a pass 'cause he's hispanic like me" Richardson. Who, by the way, has a scandal with something false on his resume in the past...not the right kind of candidate for a campaign against the lack of ethics and honesty of the other side.

No way. Richardson would sink Gore.

Gore/Obama, maybe. It can't be Edwards, since Edwards was on a losing ticket as a V.P. before. Can't be Biden because of plaguerism issues. Can't be Kucinich because...well, because it's Kucinich. There can't be another Gore/Clinton ticket like before...and Hillary would never take 2nd banana position. It would have to be Obama, or someone who is not currently a candidate. Wes Clark maybe (but that's 2 white military men...not good).
