Speech to Republican group could signal opening move

By CHRIS McGANN
P-I CAPITOL CORRESPONDENT

Talk about former U.S. Attorney John McKay's political potential has intensified lately, and it's about to get even louder.

McKay, who was fired by the Bush administration, is scheduled to speak at the Mainstream Republicans of Washington convention in Wenatchee this weekend.

The group puts a lot of muscle behind moderate Republican candidates and boasts high-profile members, including former Rep. Sid Morrison, former Gov. Dan Evans and former Secretary of State Ralph Munro.

The appearance could be seen as a chance for McKay to begin a dialogue with the Republicans he'll count on if he opts to run.

1. While this is good news for the republicans I think it is better news for all of us
Just stop and think of a world where we won't have to battle against neo-cons. I would much rather live in a country with a sane republican party where our opponents look more like Ron Paul then Karl Rove.

2. There's no indication of what he might run for
He lives in Seattle, and as such would have a difficult time trying to oust McDermott if he were to run for the House. The next Senate election isn't until 2010, and if he ran for Governor, he'd likely loose in the primary to some far right nut job like the article alluded to.
