Internet game of Virginia massace sparks outrage
Source: RawStory.com

An Australian man has sparked a storm of protest after creating an online computer game based on the murderous shooting spree at Virginia Tech in the United States last month.

Players control an image of Korean-born gunman Cho Seung-hui, who killed 32 people before turning a gun on himself, and screams can be heard on the soundtrack as shots are fired at the other characters.

The creator of "V-Tech Rampage", 21-year-old Ryan Lambourn, said he made the game "because it's funny," the Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday.

The unemployed Lambourn responded to outraged calls for him to remove the game from the Internet by demanding 1,000 US dollars for each of the two sites it is on and said that for another 1,000 dollars he would apologise.

2. But typical of our modern culture
What, really, is the difference between this and Doom, Quake and countless other first person shoot-em-ups?

3. Well, to be fair, the games you specifically name...
were about shooting up aliens who wanted to harm you and/or humanity.

But I understand the point you're making - a society that glorifies violence, and yet it recoils in horror at V-Tech wondering "How COULD this have happened?"

5. that smacks of bribery
But the real chilling part is that the young person thought that basing a game on mass murder was "funny".

6. How can this man not have an education beyond 8th grade?
Does Australia have mandatory education laws?

I find his creation in poor taste but at least it utilized the skills of his professed trade/hobby.

7. Gotta love recycled news.
These stories seem to pop up regularly after any kind of major event. Most major FPS games allow people to create their own levels, and the full code has been released for some older ones permitting people to build completely custom games with little real programming skill. Whenever anything like this happens, there's always some smartass who wants to take a shot at the spotlight by releasing a minor mod that nobody would have ever played if the press had just ignored it. The world is full of assholes, and the media just eggs them on by running these types of stories.

FWIW, I built a series of Doom deathmatch maps back in the day based on various buildings in and around UC Berkeley. Back then people just thought it was cool. Nowadays they'd probably try to prosecute me for encouraging terrorists.

8. Ryan Lambourn! Your a Genius!
but your not L€€T.

Who would have thunk it...blackmail. BUT BUT -- you really have to do a little more work.

It's a flash game. It's amateurish and it sux.

This guy didn't even bother to 'MOD' or 'skin' a single thing; no sound effects other than Collective Souls' 'Let Your Light...' (ya!)

-- no money for lazy netizens I'm afraid.

The Game is hosted here and the comments section is kinda funny

17. And it's certified free of spyware and adware!
How freakin' considerate of them!

Y'know, I have no problem with violent videogames where people defend against invaders, etc. But when it comes to a real crime and real people, it ceases to be entertaining.

some folks just don't have a sense of humor.

or, to put it another way, it seems only SOME things are permitted to be turned into video game violence.

14. Oh come on now, you know it's distasteful and probably 'offensive' to many.
I'm personally not offended by it, but that doesn't really say much since I seem devoid of the offended emotion. I wonder though, would you be saying the same thing if someone made a Haditha Simulation, Abu Ghraib Manager, or a Nazi Concentration Camp Tycoon game? Or are you an equal opportunity non-offendeder(new word)?

I'm more interested in the guy's life story though.. heh, it sounds like part of an article on TheOnion.

*I'd personally rather allow people to make games that may be offensive than to start censoring people because others find it distasteful. I find once you do that then you open up a whole lotta other crap of people trying to impose their 'moral' view points down your throat.

Did anyone doubt some antisocial clown would program up such drivel? The only surprise is the Zelda v1.0 level graphics.
