Dobson says he will not back Giuliani in 2008
Source: REUTERS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Religious conservative leader James Dobson said on Thursday he would not vote for 2008 Republican presidential contender Rudolph Giuliani under any circumstances because of his support for abortion rights and his three marriages.

Dobson, head of the influential Colorado-based group Focus on the Family, said Giuliani was not suited for the White House. Dobson said he would be willing to sit out the November 2008 election if Giuliani is the Republican presidential nominee.

"I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008," Dobson wrote in a commentary posted online at the Web site worldnetdaily.com.

Given a choice between Giuliani and the Democratic nominee, he said, "I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran -- or if worse comes to worst -- not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life."

7. How did you guess ???
Mccain , Rommney and Guilliani do not make the grade

Dobson, (Focus on the family) Shaffley, The EagleForm
and the Family Research group have decided to wait
and check out Thompson. If he does not pass muster.
"We will bring Gingrich into the race"

Must admit organization does have power.

5. Preach it, Dobson!
"He also said the former mayor's three marriages raised "moral concerns about Giuliani's candidacy that conservatives should find troubling."

9. Dobson Not Voting or Writing in Snowflake Sam Works for me.
I didn't know the repugs were adopting a ban on multiple marriages for their candidates. Somebody better tell Eye of Newt and Boob Barr. McCain's been married twice. Is one divorce acceptable or do the concerned shrews allow one "mistake?" It would be interesting to do a survey of republic reps and tally up the marriages.

11. Rev. Dobson should be praised for following his conscience
And if his conscience tells him that withholding his vote from Giuliani (giggle) or voting for a third party candidate (snort), then that's (giggle) what he should do.

He has a PhD in psychology, but I don't believe he's ordinated as a pastor or minister.

12. Old news...
This was out at least a week ago. On Scarborough Country this evening Joe was reporting that evangelicals are going for Rudi big time in Ohio. It may turn out that the religious right may be breaking away from the "values" stuff and thinking about doing what's necessary to win. Dobson may be leading a charge with no troops behind him come Nov. 2008.

The more divided the repugs are on their candidates the better off our candidates are. Hopefully Giuliani can pull off the nomination and all the nutjobs will stay home.

19. I agree
Not that Rudy is anything we would want, but he's less extreme than others. The more extreme the Repub nominee, the better for Dems

18. I don't have the numbers but from what I understand, rightwing evangelicals and
and extremist fundamentalists make up most of the R party. So I can't figure how Guliani is polling so highly with them.

20. I don't believe that's true
RW, evangelical, fundamentalists are a vocal minority that has a disproportionate level of visibility and control in the GOP. Most Republicans I know are fiscally conservative moderates.

23. Oh, I hope you are right about that. I keep thinking about the Robertsons,
the Falwells (his supporters now), Meyers, Osteems, Dobsons, and that whole group of people who pack those arenas with Bush** loving republicans. I need to go out and find some poll data. Like I said, I don't get it that the right-wing supports Guliani.

24. The right wing definitely does not support Giuliani
If the RW is still really in charge of the GOP, they'll be stupid and nominate someone like Huckabee or Brownback and get creamed in the general election. I'm afraid they may grow a brain this time.

26. If they do grow a brain, it means to me that the country may be getting on
a better track. At least we can argue with republicans about things that matter rather than bible oriented things like whether or not Noah packed all those animals on a 440 foot long boat and whether the earth is 6000 years old.

21. Richard Land said the same thing on Diane Rehm Show yesterday
He said he could support McCain, but not Rudy. Of course, everything he said was based on the supposition that Hillary Clinton is our candidate; everybody was "I could vote for Brownback/Hunter/McCain/etc. as opposed to Hillary Clinton." But not Rudy.

Land is, of course, the Southern Baptist guy who is in with Dobson and Co.
