Story Highlights• Insurgents launch multiple bomb attacks in bid to free inmates from Mosul prison
• Attack was largest in northern Iraqi city in eight months, U.S. military official says
• Bombs killed 10 Iraqi police officers, one Iraqi soldier, two civilians
• Iraqi troops, backed by the U.S. military, fought with insurgents for two hours

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- At least nine bombings in and near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Wednesday were aimed at freeing hundreds of inmates from an Iraqi prison, Iraqi and U.S. military sources said.

A high-ranking U.S. military official said Thursday that Iraqi security forces showed they were trained and ready with their response to what he said was the largest insurgent attack in that part of Iraq in eight months.

Mosul police spokesman Gen. Saied al-Jabouri said intelligence reports suggested the attacks were coordinated by al Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq -- which he said were "two sides of the same coin" -- and were an effort to free at least 300 inmates from the al-Faisaliya prison in Mosul.

Al-Jabouri said seven of the 10 vehicle-borne bombs were suicide car bombings and that a key bridge, many buildings, shops and homes were destroyed during a six-hour period starting late Wednesday afternoon.

BAGHDAD (AP) - About 50 suspected insurgents attacked a coalition
base in the center of a northern Iraqi city Friday, sparking a battle
with U.S. soldiers and helicopters that killed at least six militants,
the Iraqi army said.

The fighting took place in Baqouba, a Sunni insurgent stronghold that
has seen a recent spike in violence largely blamed on militants who
fled a 3-month-old security crackdown in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, the massive search for three missing U.S. soldiers believed
to have been kidnapped by al-Qaida-linked insurgents entered its
seventh day.

At 7 a.m. Friday, the day of rest in mostly Muslim Iraq, about 50
suspected insurgents opened fire on a U.S.-Iraqi base in downtown
Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, wounding two Iraqi soldiers,
an Iraqi army officer said.

BAGHDAD: Ambushes on Iraq's deadly roadways killed six people on Friday, as insurgents continued to launch attacks outside Baghdad, where US and Iraqi troops are pressing a three-month-old security plan.

Three Iraqi policemen were killed and another two wounded when a suicide car bomber ploughed into a checkpoint they were manning south of Baghdad, police officials said.

One day earlier, three US soldiers had been killed by a roadside bomb, also south of the capital.

Also on Friday, three truck drivers were killed on a road connecting the northern cities of Kirkuk and Mosul, the latest in a series of attacks along highways in that area
