5 Killed in Mosque Explosion in India

By OMER FAROOQ

HYDERABAD, India -- A bomb ripped through a historic mosque as
Friday prayers were ending in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad,
killing at least five people and wounding several others, officials
said. Two other unexploded bombs were found and defused by police.

Minutes after the blast, Muslims angered by what they said was a
lack of police protection began chanting slogans _ a situation that
quickly devolved into mobs throwing stones at police, who responded
with baton charges and tear gas.

The bombing and ensuing clash between worshippers and police raised
fears of wider Hindu-Muslim violence in the city, which has long been
plagued by communal tensions and occasional spasms of religious
bloodletting.

Many of those injured in the explosion at the 17th-century Mecca
Masjid were severely wounded, and the city's police chief, Balwinder
Singh, warned the death toll could rise.

Haz. Pir Kilimi's family is from Hydrabad. I hope they were not injured and were able to pour the oil of peace on the troubled waters there.

(Updates with new death toll, details)

HYDERABAD, India, May 18 (Reuters) - A bomb exploded during Friday
prayers at a historic mosque in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad,
killing at least nine worshippers.

A few hours after the blast, police fired on an angry crowd near the
mosque, killing three protesters and wounding five.

Police said more than 50 people were injured in the blast at Mecca
Masjid, the main mosque in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh
state. The city, which is one of India's IT hubs, has also long been
a communal flashpoint.

It was the third major bombing of a mosque in India over the last year.
Authorities fear the attacks could spark communal unrest between
minority Muslims and majority Hindus.

Uneasy calm in Indian city a day after mosque blast

HYDERABAD, India, May 19 (Reuters) - An uneasy calm prevailed
in India's southern city of Hyderabad on Saturday as thousands
of police patrolled the streets, a day after a bomb blast in
a historic mosque and subsequent clashes killed at least 14.

Ten people died in the explosion which took place during Friday
prayers at the sprawling 17th century Mecca Masjid. Police
later shot dead four people in clashes with hundreds of enraged
Muslims who went on a rampage in protest at the attack.

Investigating agencies and analysts have said members of the
banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) could have
been behind these blasts in coordination with Pakistan-based
militant groups.

The aim, they say, is to trigger communal clashes in India which,
while more than 80 percent Hindu, has the world's second biggest
Muslim population after Indonesia.

HYDERABAD, India, May 19 (Reuters) - At least two policemen were injured on Saturday when a mob pelted them with stones after a burial of victims from a mosque explosion and ensuing violent clashes in the Indian city of Hyderabad.

Eleven people died in the explosion which took place during Friday prayers at the sprawling 17th-century Mecca Masjid.

Hundreds of people were returning on Saturday after burying the dead when they started stoning the police, who had escorted them to the burial ground. Police fired eight rounds in the air and also used teargas to disperse the mob.

"Beat the police," "Allah is great", the protesters chanted.
