Man Charged In Seattle With Faking War Record (Jesse Macbeth)
Source: Associated Press

SEATTLE -- A man who tried to position himself as a leader of the anti-war movement by claiming to have participated in war crimes while serving in Iraq is facing federal charges of falsifying his record.

A complaint unsealed Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle charged 23-year-old Jesse Adam Macbeth with one count of using or possessing a forged or altered military discharge certificate, and one count of making false statements in seeking benefits from the Veterans Administration.

Macbeth garnered much attention on blogs and in some alternative media after he began claiming in 2005 to have been awarded a Purple Heart for his service, which he said included slaughtering innocent civilians in a Fallujah mosque.

His story was contradicted by his true discharge form, showing that he was kicked out of the Army after six weeks at Fort Benning, Ga., in 2003 because of his "entry level performance and conduct."

This scumbag pretended to be an Army Ranger who committed war crimes and killed over 200 enemies in combat. And a lot of people ate it up.

19. I pulled it as soon as it was clear it was a hoax
IMO the fact that so many people believed it is evidence that American Armed Forces have a serious credibility problem.

20. As someone once said, "There's a sucker born every minute."
That's nothing new. The fact that people will buy into nonsense is not new. That some did so in this instance is "evidence" of nothing other than:

1) there are a lot of gullible people in the world, and

2) there are people who allow their biases to cloud their judgement so badly that they disseminate the lies of a wannabe poseur without putting any effort into trying to confirm or refute the veracity of the claims of a wannabe poseur because it suits their purposes.

Those falling within the latter group have a serious credibility problem, of their own making.

22. Abu Ghraib and Haditha set the stage
and yes, they've created a serious credibility problem for US armed forces.

11. yes but he sold something to a large segment of people that bought it.
many were duped, wanted to believe his story at face value, and never questioned the person that flunked out of bootcamp

Well now, isn't that priceless .

18. He also was never a Ranger. Macbeth was unmasked as a fraud a year ago.
Since you've said you were a Ranger, it's somewhat surprising that Macbeth's previously well-publicized claims and unmasking were unknown to you until you recently posted his video on DU. Macbeth's fraud did stir outrage among those who had served.

8. I hear real Rangers don't like pretenders
I also understand - from a buddy of mine who was one - that Navy SEALs like them even less. He didn't elaborate on what he meant exactly, but I wouldn't be surprised if it involved a trip behind a dumpster.

One does not make it into an elite corps just by showing up on time. It's a long, painful process of weeding out those who can't hack it. I can't blame a genuine Army Ranger for being pissed. They've been through Hell to prove themselves, so this guy is nothing more than a thief.

9. Rangers laugh at assholes like this.
Too busy doing other things to get wrapped around the axle about crap like this.

Maybe the Navy guys have more time on their hands, but I doubt it.
