BAGHDAD (AFP) - Eight more American troops were killed In Iraq, seven of them on a single day, the US military said Saturday, amid raging violence and a desperate search for three captured soldiers.

Three US soldiers were killed Friday when their vehicle was bit by a bomb northeast of Baghdad, and two more in an ambush inside the city in which a gunmen opened fire on a patrol already hit by a roadside booby-trap

Another soldier died in combat in western Iraq, one was shot dead while on foot patrol in Baghdad and the eighth was killed on Saturday by a roadside bomb south of the capital that wounded two US and two Iraqi troops

U.S. soldiers killed in explosion in northern Iraq
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Three U.S. soldiers were killed in an explosion near their vehicle Friday in the restive northern Iraqi province of Diyala, the U.S. military said.

All three were Task Force Lightning soldiers.

With the deaths, 58 U.S. military service members have been killed this month and 3,409 have been killed since the start of the war.

Last week a U.S. military commander in charge of northern Iraqi operations said that the central government needs to better help its soldiers, police and governments in the provinces, and he said more troops are needed in restive Diyala province.

"We have put additional forces in there over that last couple months, an additional Stryker battalion, but I'm going to need additional forces in Diyala province to get that situation to a more acceptable level," said Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, commander of Multi-National Division-North and the 25th Infantry Division.

illegals a legal status? Blows my mind. Closing the border is much more critical. No wonder Congress has such low ratings. Their ratings went up slightly when the Dems took control and then dropped again. What does that say? Dems are not holding the repubs feet to the fire on Iraq in particular and quite possibly impeachment.

10. Support our troops by bringing them home NOW. This has

gotten well beyond the stage where political debates make any sense. Bush needs to be confronted head on by the Democratic Congress and told that setting our troops up as sitting ducks will no longer be tolerated. We can only imagine the grief that the families of the fallen are feeling at this continuing disaster.

12. ALL foreign troops should leave Iraq.

This is all sad, but I would hate to see NATO or some other group step in to take the pressure off the US in the occupation. The US broke it and should bear total responsibility materially and in terms of lives lost. It seems that some "anti-war" forces want foreign powers to step in to let the US sneak out with "pride intact." No, this is a defeat and should be universally acknowledged as such.
