Child in day care dies after being bound with tape

A day care worker was being held Saturday in the death of a 2-year-old boy whose hands were bound and his mouth covered with masking tape, police said.

The boy, who had been on life support, died late Thursday, Officer Jason Willingham said.

Vicki Leigh Chiles was being held without bail on a complaint of first-degree murder. She was the only worker at the facility at the time, looking after eight children ages 7 and younger, Willingham said.

Chiles told police the boy would not be quiet for nap time, so she used tape to silence him, an arrest report states.

1. Is this kind of thing increasing, or is it just me???

We've had two HORRIBLE cases of child abuse in our small city in the last six months -- one fatal and one a hair short of fatal. Also, cases of animal abuse. I don't remember seeing so much before. It's as if it's suddenly okay to take out your aggressions on the weak and vulnerable.

it will end-up as after a plea bargin deal.....The outcome, the death was never anticipated nor the intention of the babysitter.

but there isn't much of a "bargain" for prosecutors in this case. They likely have all the evidence they need to convict based on criteria of 2), and the fact it was an infant.

6. How awful for this to happen to the child....

a two year old not being quiet for nap time is normal behavior. It seems you should have more than one person taking care of eight children. Day care should be strictly regulated so something like this can't happen.

According to KOTV:

...Chiles was already under investigation. On Tuesday, the state filed felony child abuse charges against Chiles. In that case she's accused of hitting an 8-year-old boy numerous times with a fly-swatter. Because of that charge DHS came to the house hoping to shut the facility down, when the arrived they discovered the 2-year-old unconscious.

But the parents who put their children in her daycare did not know any of this:

Like other parents who brought their children to Chiles daycare, the Hudson's thought their two boys were safe.

“She took our children to church, they prayed before every meal,” said parent Jenna Hudson.

Now they're questioning what else Vicki Chiles may have done, because now she is charged with murder.

“Disbelief. I'm angry. I'm mad that someone I trusted my children with could do something so horrid,” Hudson said.
