Harvard security guards approve strike vote - 05/21/07

With negotiations between Harvard University’s security contractor and the companies employees entering month number four – the security guards have given their union the power to call a strike. Previously Harvard students had taken up the security guard plight, hosting a nine-day hunger strike which they ended after University officials said they would audit Allied Barton and determine if the company was abiding by Harvard’s Wage and Benefit Parity Policy. AlliedBarton security workers are currently paid 19 cents less than the university’s in-house guards. The guards, represented by SEIU, are seeking a “living wage” of $15 per hour.
