Transit workers strike. Buses and metro trains won't run outside peak hours as MTC rejects new pension proposal - and riders wonder when service will return
JASON MAGDER AND DEBBIE PARKES, The Gazette
Published: Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Montreal's chaotic traffic situation is likely to get even worse starting today after Montreal Transit Corp. maintenance workers walked off the job at midnight.

Although peak-hour service will be maintained by law, transit users who have to travel outside those hours will have to find another way to get around.

The mechanics and maintenance staff voted unanimously in favour of a strike last night.

"If there is a strike, it's because the Montreal Transit Corp. wants one and so does (MTC chairperson Claude) Trudel and (Mayor Gerald) Tremblay," Pierre Saint-Georges, president of the union representing 2,142 mechanics and maintenance workers, said last night after the vote.

City councillor says province needs to intervene in strike

As the transit strike enters its third month, city councillors will be debating whether to ask Premier Gordon Campbell to impose a "60-day cooling off period" to temporarily force strikers back to work while negotiations continue.

The NDP government implemented back-to-work legislation during the 1993 teachers’ strike and Coun. Sandy McCormick wants council to ask the new Liberal government to take some sort of action now. "There is an accepted practice of doing that in certain situations and this situation is desperate. It’s causing such hardships on people."

McCormick raised the motion at the June 5 council meeting, but because it was at the last minute, it won’t be debated until next week’s meeting. "I would like to see the new government look at what they can do to expedite a resolution," McCormick said, pointing out the job action has stranded students, tourists, the elderly and other citizens.

"I’ll be talking with my colleagues to gauge what level of support there is, but I do hear a strong message from the public that they want things back to normal. Let’s stop making the public the victims of this dispute."
