U.S. bluntly, and in red, rejects G8 climate draft
Source: MSNBC

LONDON - The United States has rejected Germany's bid to get the Group of Eight industrialized nations to agree to tough cuts in climate warming carbon emissions, according to a draft of the statement to be presented to next month's meeting.

The blunt language of the rejection sets the scene for a showdown at the summit to be held at the German resort of Heiligendamm from June 6-8.

"The U.S. still has serious, fundamental concerns about this draft statement," it said in red ink comments at the start of a copy of the draft communique seen by Reuters on Friday.

G8 president Germany wants the meeting to agree targets and timetables for steep cuts in emissions and increases in energy efficiency in transport and power generation.

4. Maybe they should just postpone everything until after GWB is out of office.
I don't know if that's feasible. I've just always been taught it's best to ignore bullies.

11. In a way,
that's exactly what we're doing. The question remains, can the world wait until the boy king is out of office?

9. It almost seems worth asking someone else to negotiate on behalf of the USA
Say, Al Gore and Schwarzenegger (because international relations do require bending over backwards to be 'balanced'), and getting all presidential candidates to agree that those 2 speak for their future administrations. The problem would be if Gore then wanted to run - substitute Howard Dean, perhaps?

10. Or maybe let the states
agree to these goals independently. The article mentions that some states (including Ca.) are beginning to change environmental requirements on their own. Obviously, the Bush Admin. isn't going to do anything.
