Loud Boos Greet (Andy) Card at UMass
Edited on Sat May-26-07 10:33 AM by VolcanoJen
Source: Amherst newspaper

AMHERST - When it came time for former White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. to receive an honorary doctorate degree yesterday, the din was so loud that few, if any, of those in attendance could hear the reasons for the honor.

Card was honored yesterday at the University of Massachusetts graduate student graduation despite repeated protests, petitions and demonstrations asking that the doctorate of public service be revoked.

Card smiled and waved his award as the booing continued. Some faculty members and graduates waved yellow placards reading "Honor Grads Dis-Card" behind and in front of Card as university President Jack M. Wilson presented him with the degree.

Just shown on CNN... it's really worth a watch, so you might want to stay tuned in. They resoundly boo the former Chief of Staff, Andy "New Product Line" Card, for two solid minutes!!

4. Wow. That was stunning.
Gave me goosebumps.

Screw these war criminals who think they can just waltz around like they've done nothing and we'll all just pretend along with them, silently. Kudos to those students and faculty, the University president is a moron.

10. I'm soaring with pride for these young people and some of their
professors. I feel elated at the same time I want to cry - it's been five years of fighting this war and though this was one of the most fantastic protests, I cry because it is taking all this time for all the public to catch on and there isn't any end in sight. Is there a name for emotions that split a person in half?

DUers - never let his 'easy going' style fool you. That is one evil man who should stand before a tribunal of patriots and world judges.

Were there any graduates not wearing those signs? I couldn't see any.

This was so wrong. This graduation was for the students and those students did not want to honor Card. How could the University be so disrespectful of their graduation ceremony? How could they honor that criminal against the students' wishes?

22. When Schwarze-nazi spoke at the commencement ceremony
for Santa Monica College, his entire speech was booed loudly and passionately throughout. This was in May or June of 2004, I believe, before his three ballot initiatives all went down to defeat in California. I WAS THERE AS A GUEST OF A GRADUATING STUDENT AND WAS ABLE TO HELP SHOUT SCHWARZE-NAZI DOWN! That's the only language these neo-con thugs and crooks understand.

21. Great to see tenured faculty practise academic freedom in the purest sense.
At lots of universities groups of faculty will sputter around and sign an outraged letter indignantly objecting to an insulting choice for an honorary degree recipient - but come commencement, they participate like silent sheep. It was terrific to see all those different colored academic doctoral hoods & robes with the velvet sleeve stripes - adorned with protest signs in the official entrance march. The whole purpose of tenure was to allow the intellectual leaders of higher ed to state their opinions and beliefs without fear of being fired.

24. I gave it 5 stars and a comment
"Treason doth never prosper: what's the reason?
For if it prosper, none dare call it treason."
- Sir John Harington

This is proven day in and day out every moment of the Bush Regime. If you're going to lie, lie big. They have, and the people are only now starting to wake up.

The students should have egged him.

26. Wow -- what a shameful thing for the university to do. . .
Considering how overwhelming the sentiment was in that auditorium (I didn't see a single person who supported Card), why would UMass not cancel it and allow the students to celebrate the day without the controversy?

Good for the graduates -- and it warmed my heart to see the faculty join in the protest. Very powerful stuff.

29. We need a University "honor roll", which credits significant student activism...
Edited on Sat May-26-07 03:30 PM by calipendence
UMass and Georgetown now certainly deserve to be put on that list...

If we're going to have a "Bottom 10" University list, I'd nominate Hillsdale College for that one (perhaps with Regents University too?), with grads like Phil Crane, ex-Rethug congress critter (and unfortunately next door neighbor for me in high school) Chris Chocola, Blackwater founder Erik Prince, Mr. "Istanbul is Baghdad" Howard Kaloogian, and other wingnuts!

http://www.nndb.com/edu/591/000079354/

And it certainly doesn't downplay its hypocrisy (as most wingnut institutions can't seem to avoid) either with its school president having a nasty sordid affair with his daughter-in-law:

http://www.nndb.com/edu/591/000079354/

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll//artikkel?SearchID=73049970421921&Avis=TO&Dato=20010114&Kategori=NEWS21&Lopenr=10114001&Ref=AR

and from this link:

http://www.answers.com/topic/hillsdale-college

Hillsdale currently ranks in the third tier of the 2007 U.S. News & World Report listing of best American Liberal Arts colleges<4>, but ranks first in the Princeton Review's The Best 361 Colleges 2007 listing of colleges where students are "most nostalgic for Ronald Reagan" (politically conservative)<5> . It also ranks number seven in the Princeton Review's listing of the top ten private best-value colleges.
