BAGHDAD - At least eight U.S. soldiers were killed in restive Diyala province north of Baghdad on Memorial Day, two of the victims in a helicopter that went down, the military reported Tuesday.

All the dead were Task Force Lightning soldiers. The military said six soldiers died in explosions near their vehicles, but gave no further information.

It was not immediately known if the helicopter was shot down or suffered mechanical difficulties.

The names of the soldiers were withheld until their families could be notified.

The latest casualties raised the U.S. military death toll to at least 114 this month, making May the deadliest for 2007.

8 U.S. troops killed in Iraq chopper shootdown, roadside bombs
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Eight U.S. troops were killed on Monday in an attack in Iraq's Diyala province, a U.S. military official said.

The official said that a Kiowa helicopter was shot down between Baquba and Muqdadiya with small arms, killing the chopper's two pilots.

A quick reaction force was called in to recover the chopper.

One of the force's vehicles was struck by a roadside bomb, and five more U.S. troops were killed.

A second vehicle in the force was hit, killing one soldier. (Posted 7:02 a.m.)

8. that helicopter was not shot down
The pilot decided to set it down due to a mechanical failure after some small arms fire was coincidentally seen in the area. Move along, nothing to see here.

9. Did you get that info right from the dead pilot?
...or will you provide a link?

BAGHDAD, May 29 (Reuters) - Two U.S. military personnel were killed when their helicopter came down under enemy fire north of Baghdad and six more died when a column of vehicles heading to the crash site was ambushed, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

The deaths on Monday brought the U.S. military death toll in Iraq to 112 this month, making May the deadliest for 2007 and equalling the record set in December 2006.

A total of 3,463 U.S. soldiers have died since the March 2003 invasion. The worst month for U.S. forces was November 2004, when 137 were killed.

U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Garver said the helicopter came down in Diyala province, where 3,000 additional U.S. troops have been sent to fight mostly al Qaeda militants.

"There was ground fire involved but we don't know how the helicopter went down," he said.

He said a quick reaction force had been dispatched to secure the crash site. Six soldiers were killed when their vehicles were hit by roadside bombs.

Militants have employed similar tactics in the past -- shooting down a helicopter and then ambushing the rescue force.

Insurgents have shot down at least nine helicopters this year, killing 30 people, mainly American soldiers. Seven of those aircraft were U.S. military helicopters and the other two belonged to a private American security company.

Diyala, a large, ethnically mixed region northeast of Baghdad, has seen some of the worst violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Violence has surged further in recent months since a crackdown in Baghdad forced militants to seek new bases.

10. I forgot to include my sarcasm tag
In other news, several more soldiers were killed in a traffic accident when their tank overturned. Military sources say that this is just a routine but tragic traffic accident and had nothing to do with the IED that exploded under the vehicle immediately preceding the turnover.

14. Now keep in mind -
there was a New York Times article over the weekend. It mentioned that U.S. troops no longer believe in what they are supposed to be doing over there.

I believe it was quoted as "95% of my buddies agree with me", meaning, US troops do not believe in what they have been told about "helping the Iraqis", "the people we're trying to help are trying to kill us".

We have now reached the point where the troops don't care any longer. They will be careless at the wheel, conflicted inside, tear up the machinery of the tanks they're driving because they realize they've been fed lies.

It's Viet Nam.
Just watch.
