Brazil to subsidise contraception
Source: BBC

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has introduced a $51m (£26m) plan to subsidise birth control pills in Latin America's largest country.

He said the programme would give the poor the same right as the wealthy to have the number of children they want.

The initiative comes just two weeks after Pope Benedict's visit to Brazil, when he urged Catholics to maintain traditional family values.

Brazil already tackles Aids and other STDs by handing out free condoms.

3. Good Public Health move. (aside) Contraceptive services *are* subsidized in the US
as well. In California, the FamPACT program offers contraceptive services, as well as STD screening, routine pap smears, etc. for low income residents. Access is predicated by income, but the limits are pretty good.

5. Brazil is doing surprisingly well, innit?
Oil production just surpassed consumption... the R$ is rising but exports are not falling... the minimum wage is getting higher-than-inflation rises... (not as much as it should but it's something)... Brazilian companies are making strides worldwide...

And there's still a crackpot or two who says he is a Communist dictator. Yes, Lula. Thankfully, few people pay attention to these bozos except to enjoy the unintended humor.

6. Yes, they are crackpots and probably foreign insinuators.
Of course, he is not perfect (although when side by side certain other heads of state he is very close to a genius!) and I wonder about many of the current Brazilian political challenges but that is best discussed over a little coffee.

In reference to your link: several times I have wondered if the recalled pet food will end up in the cattle feed and pet foods of other countries, in particular those with trade agreements with China and with less controls over the byproducts and fiscal control.

I was in Brazil after Chernobyl, and the contaminated milk surfaced in the supermarkets of Rio at rock bottom below market and highly suspicious prices. The scandal was only uncovered months later and was given minimal press.
