Lieberman in Iraq on unannounced trip
Source: CNN

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is in the Iraqi capital on an unannounced trip, CNN's Paula Hancocks reported Wednesday.

He visited a joint security station where U.S. and Iraqi forces are based, as well as a forward operating base and a local Baghdad market.

Lieberman, the independent Democrat from Connecticut, has largely backed the Bush administration's policies in Iraq.

His trip comes a few weeks after Vice President Dick Cheney's unannounced visit to Iraq.

5. It is a Two Party system, doncha know
If they made it obvious that Lieberman ran -- and won -- as an independent, it would mean that independents are capable of running to win. And we can't have that, can we?

6. "independent Democrat"
Maybe we should all become "independent Democrats"

The DLC does a lot of things I don't like...maybe Joey is on the right track. Maybe we should all just do what we think is right for us. "independent Repubs" should do the same shit, if they don't like what the pResident is doing.

9. Elected independent, caucusing with the Democratic Party.
They've been calling him this for months now. Nothing new. If the party doesn't like it, the party should expel him crom caucus and the state party itself should remove him from its rolls. The party likes it very much compared to the alternatives, so that's not happening.

13. The state party *has* expelled him
I seem to recall there being a firm rule that a person who runs under any banner than Democrat can not be registered as a Democrat and is automatically dropped from the party's rolls. Unless they made a special exception, he has not been a registered Democrat since he lost the primary and said he would run anyway.

17. Uh I was very closely watching at the time and the state party refused to act.
The woman responsible simply refused to remove him and that was the end of the story.

It is not an automatic process. And the person who could have cause the process to occur simply balked. I read it on FireDogLake.com.

If he is still a registered Democrat, then he is a Democrat no matter how distasteful it may be.

20. Exactly.
Mind you, this has NOTHING to do with why the media calls him an Independent Democrat. Lieb prefers to be called that because he was elected Independent and caucuses as a Democrat - and it makes him sound good.

7. Go for a walking tour Joe
http://dahrjamailiraq.com/weblog/archives/iraq_dispatches/000594.php#more

Needless to say, Baghdad has been changed into THE CITY OF GARBAGE. You can find it everywhere. You can smell the stench
of dead bodies wherever you go.

Talking of electricity, there is now only one hour daily. That’s it. From where we’re staying in the city center, in Bab al-Muadham,
I can see from the balcony that people sleep nearly naked on their rooftops because it is so hot and there is no electricity to run
fans or air conditioners. Thank God that there are two large generators that maintain electricity in our building.

10. Oh I hope the bad guys don't capture GI Joey...
Of course a big tough guy like Joe, would just tell them Mullah torturers to bring it on.

"Is that the worst you candy assed terra-ist bastids can do to me," he'd scream...

Give Joey a rifle and turn him loose for a couple of days and he'll whip Baghdad into place, so much that it will look like Middleport Ohio or Richwood West Virginia on prayer meetin' night.

After all the location is great, right next door to Iran so he wouldn't even need too long a stick to poke them with.

Oh, yeah, Joe. It looks like a greeeeeeeeaaaaaaaat place to wander around and see the sights! Why, it looks totally safe and loads of fun, though my bro-in-law is in the exact same place, and he claims it's a hellhole that no one in his right mind would want to "visit."

33. they brought the plastic turkey, but forgot Bush
maybe if we start the rumor he stayed in the U.S. all along (like Bush and Christmas '03), he'll embarrass himself by inventing mid-Atlantic radio contacts to "refute" the rumor
