Schwarzenegger, Ontario premier in stem cell deal
Source: Reuters

Ontario and California will work together to develop new stem cell therapies to help conquer cancer, and will cooperate on curbing greenhouse gas emission, the leaders of the two regions said on Wednesday.

Flanked by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty pledged C$30 million ($28 million) for a Cancer Stem Cell Consortium at a Toronto research center.

"Californian and Ontarian researchers pioneered the discovery of cancer stem cells which are at the root of many cancers," McGuinty told a packed house at the facility, just steps away from some of Canada's top hospitals.

"The cancer stem cell consortium will research ways to use this knowledge of cancer stem cells to find a lasting cure for cancer."

1. Good for Ahnold
The less he acts like a tool, the better I like it.

But the man still has a lot of penance to perform. Get cracking, muscle-boy.

3. Interesting - does Canadian funding separate research at CA universities
from US funding?

California's economy can probably weather a separation from the US economy better than the US economy can from California. Of course, the US Military is still the major employer in CA, but that's something that can easily "be negotiated" if important facilities such as Vandenberg, 29 Palms and especially San Diego is weighed. Washington and Oregon would be also be more likely to follow California's lead if the corporatists in DC start screwing with the corporatists on the West Coast.

There is a huge emotional value disconnect between the Beltway and the left Coast when it comes to control of government programs and even some corporations. I have seen it too many times.
We left coasters are still too often considered somewhat frivolous and unruly stepchildren when it comes to acknowledging our "value" to a company or a government program.

4. He's making quite a splash here in Ottawa
He's giving a speech here to businessmen about greening their businesses.

Apparently, it's a much anticipated event.

They keep going on and on about how "green" he is.

5. Schwarzenegger inks research, pollution deals

California and Ontario became "soulmates" today by signing deals to fight climate change and boost stem cell research, said a beaming Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Canada and California are “as powerful as anyone could ever be on stem cell research,” Schwarzenegger added.

6. Glad he's not running for Prez. He'd almost certainly win.
Almost everyone loves this man, even if they don't agree with all his positions (there IS no one with whom each of us will agree 100% of the time).

But he was born in Austria, so he can't run. Phew! The Dems are lucky on that score.

7. I, surprisingly, don't mind Arnold so much
He's a Republican, but he doesn't seem to be a completely evil, divorced-from-all-reality crazy bastard like all the rest of his Republican peers. These days, that's saying something.

10. I agree with you. I think Arnold's got his head pretty much screwed on straight...
He's certainly out in front on this stem cell business.

11. I heard that rumor too,
he wants to run against Boxer. I think that's why she is beginning to "money-up" now, early on. I have not been able to confirm it but it is spreading like wildfire in No Cal.
