Military helicopter crashed in Afghanistan-NATO
30 May 2007 18:50:55 GMT

BRUSSELS, May 30 (Reuters) - A Chinook military helicopter has
crashed in southern Afghanistan, a NATO official said on Wednesday,
but he had no word on casualties.

"I can confirm that," he said when asked about reports of a crash.
"There are few details. It's a Chinook and it was in the south."
The official at NATO headquarters in Brussels could not confirm
whether the aircraft belonged to NATO or the U.S.-led coalition
operating in Afghanistan.

3. US out of Afghanistan.
It's important to remove all US forces of occupation from that country. It's time that Afghans controlled their own destiny, so defund Pakistan too so their ISI secret police can't so easily promote theocrats in Afghanistan.

4. Crud
The son of one of my best friends flies helicopters in Afghanistan. I hope she's not watching the news - every time this happens, she goes a little nuts until her son e-mails he that he's okay. I don't know how anyone keeps her sanity in this situation, and I expect a lot of mothers are going to get some unwelcome news soon.

Taliban says it shot down NATO chopper, 35 killed
31 May 2007 07:09:33 GMT
KABUL, May 31 (Reuters) - Afghanistan's Taliban claimed responsibility on Thursday for shooting down a NATO heavy-lift helicopter and said that 35 soldiers were killed, many more than the seven dead announced by the Western military alliance.

Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf said the death toll came from secret sources operating in the southern province of Helmand, scene of a series of bloody clashes in recent months between Taliban and Western forces.

He said the twin-rotor Chinook was flying low ahead of a land vehicle convoy when it was shot down.

"Actually, Mujahideen (holy warriors) planned to ambush their convoy," Yousuf said by telephone from an undisclosed location. "But the helicopter appeared before the arrival of the convoy. The mujahideen fired on it with what ever they had."

U.S. helicopter goes down in southern Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. CH-47 Chinook helicopter went down Wednesday night in southern Afghanistan, killing all seven aboard, U.S. and NATO officials said.

Preliminary reports indicated the helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, officials said.

The crew of five Americans and two military passengers were killed.

Additionally, NATO officials said that the team that responded to the crash was ambushed, forcing them to call in an airstrike. There was no immediate word on casualties during that attack.
