Dems Plan Vote on Stem Cell Research
Source: Associated Press

Congress intends to send President Bush legislation next week to ease restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research, inviting his second veto in as many years on the subject.

As was the case last year, Bush appears likely to make his veto stick. Several Democratic officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday that supporters of the bill appear to lack the two-thirds majority needed to override him.

Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., a leading advocate of the legislation, did not dispute that assessment in an interview. ''If he does veto it again it will just show his complete unwillingness to look at this research that holds the potential for cure of these diseases,'' she said.

Both houses passed legislation on the subject earlier in the year. The final vote is expected Thursday in the House.

2. I thought Congressional Democrats thought it was impolite to send Bush a bill he'd veto.
Isn't that why they've only done it once in the last 5 months?

It's refreshing to see them have something which could vaguely be defined as an agenda on a single issue.

3. Good deal
Democrats--some of them anyway--have a lot to make up for given their recent capitulation. Passage of this bill is only a small beginning.

4. Not Gonna Work Unless...
I have very little faith in the current Democratic presence in Congress. They've folded way too many times for me, and not even for good reasons. There have been no face-saving measures, no political spin. They're not even playing the political games I hate so much...or if they are, they're playing them to lose.

This'll get shot down in a heartbeat. The only way something good and productive will come out of it is if someone wsomewhere decides to finally turn on the "spin machine" and saying something along the lines of thise proving Bush is against health care.

We really need to look into all aspects of stem cell therapies. We need cures for Alzheimer's, for diabetes, for Parkinson's and all the other genetic and autoimmune dieases that have even the slightest possibility of being affected positively by stem cell techniques.

Will this be the time the Democrats stand up to the out-of-control Emperor? Don't hold your breath...
