FBI: Violent crime still increasing
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - Violent crime kept climbing in 2006, a top FBI official said Wednesday, previewing a report detailing nationwide increases in murders, robberies and other felonies for a second straight year.

The rising crime rate, in an FBI report expected next week, counters Justice Department attempts to tamp down violence by sending more funds to local police and studying U.S. cities for clues on how the increase began.

Asked if the report would show crime rates are still rising, FBI Assistant Director John Miller said: "I think you can anticipate it will." He declined to say by how much.

Miller said the FBI's findings will largely mirror those of the Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington think-tank that in March reported spikes in the number of big-city murders, robberies and gun crimes.

1. its the economy
on the one hand lack of opportunities increase turning to illicit means for $ which often includes crimes; on the other side lack of economic opportunities also increase stressors pushing more folks over the edge (anger/violence). Add the era of huge deficits and less dollars for local police and local services... not hard to figure out where to begin the "study" (per factors)... bigger question is how much bushco will try to squelch the "findings" in the report as they won't fit the Economy is Booming so Lets cut more Corporate Taxes story line.

2. No shit ! That's what happens when you gut social services and police funding
Don't raise the minimum wage for ten years, don't raise food stamp allowances ($28 a week to eat on is impossible),warp the economy to benefit the top and make school less affordable.

People become desperate. They have no options, and they act out.

I see it EVERY DAY here in New Orleans. I see DESPERATE actions by very desperate people, and the city is going to erupt now that it is clear that 1/2 the city is getting grants and since the money ran out the other half won't. That should do interesting things to crime.

Republican policies are bad public policies. Simple as that.

4. It's the economy and the new Bush mentality that tells us
that if you want it, take it... as long as it isn't sexual gratification. I wonder how long it will take for the bushbots to figure out a way to blame the Clenis for this.

6. Justification
no doubt, for new law-and-order crack downs on one and all.

...and ignoring the fact that the stats for total violent crimes are still well below half of what they were in 93/94. The precipate drop started then. Two years of upticks isn't really likely to wipe out the decade of declines.
