On Iraq, Bush Says Public is With Him
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Confronted with strong opposition to his Iraq policies, President George W. Bush decides to interpret public opinion his own way. Actually, he says, people agree with him.

Democrats view the November elections that gave them control of Congress as a mandate to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq. They are backed by evidence; election exit poll surveys by The Associated Press and television networks found 55 percent saying the U.S. should withdraw some or all of its troops from Iraq.

Bush says Democrats have it all wrong: the public does not want the troops pulled out - they want to give the military more support in its mission.

"Last November, the American people said they were frustrated and wanted a change in our strategy in Iraq," he said April 24, ahead of a veto showdown with congressional Democrats over their desire to legislation a troop withdrawal timeline. "I listened. Today, General David Petraeus is carrying out a strategy that is dramatically different from our previous course."

This is probably the SCARIEST article that I have read since this
clown took office. He's either completely delusional or he's
just flat out letting us know that America and her opinions don't
matter and will never matter.

5. Look what military members say about this story!
They're discussing this article at Military.com--a site for military and friends to discuss current
events.

I was astounded at the lack of support for Bush. Check out the comments at the link below.

Here's a random sample:

"Talk about self denial!!!"

"You think perhaps the alcohol and drugs killed to many brain cells?"

"Is this another pretzel choking incident?"

"I for one would love to support the President’s plans in Iraq, past and present. However, he and his crew have been wrong in every major decision where Iraq is concerned. I do not see how anyone can support such failure."

23. Here is another good one:
Edited on Thu May-31-07 09:07 AM by waiting for hope
"There is no patriotism in supporting this war or this president.

I love my country and all that it stands for, but it's pretty sad to see our Lady Liberty beaten, bruised, bloodied, and brutally raped by a bunch of money-centric oil hogs.

If anyone is a student in history, you will recall the last president we had that was like this - William McKinley. Who succeeded him?

Arguably one of the best presidents this country has ever had - Theodore Roosevelt."

Thanks for the link, I kinda enjoyed that!

Hey, what do polls know? They just go "poof" at times. (Pollseters refer to this phenomenon as "poll-poofing.")

W. knows the public is on his side because everyone within a 10-foot radius tells him it's true, and those are the only voices he hears. Those and the voice behind the smirk that tells him he's Napoleon.

the bigger the lie, the more believable it is. For example, Not voting to fund the war is not supporting the troops. The best way to win the war is to throw more money at it. Like it was ever "winnable" to begin with. Let's see if the American people buy into this BS.

78. You are so right, RethugAssKicker
this reminds me of a quote by Hitler
“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it”
Adolf Hitler

I think that Karl Rove got many of his ideas from that evil man. Some other quotes of Hitler that remind me of this administration-

“It is always more difficult to fight against faith than against knowledge.”

“I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator"

“Universal education is the most corroding and disintegrating poison that liberalism has ever invented for its own destruction.”

“What luck for the rulers that men do not think”

“The broad masses of a population are more amenable to the appeal of rhetoric than to any other force.”
There is a road to freedom. Its milestones are Obedience, Endeavor, Honesty, Order, Cleanliness, Sobriety, Truthfulness, Sacrifice, and love of the Fatherland.”

“The greater the lie, the greater the chance that it will be believed”

After they talked to him, they realized that he was crazy. Better to play along and get something for us out of the bill, then have him declare martial law or something else as equally crazy. Until they get the veto proof votes, their hands are tied, and even then we don't know what would happen. He could bomb Iran. Damn, I just thought about it, what if the dems caved in on the Iraq bill so he would hold off on bombing Iran?

I think most all of us can agree that we support our troops - we support them so much we fight to help bring them home and make sure they get the proper care and medical condition. This support for our troops has NOTHING to do with supporting the war.

I think this is where Bush is getting his numbers - proving once again what a delusional man this person is

since moron* has appointed the war czar, I wonder how long luke will last.

I see this latest statement by the disconnected in charge* as the start of the final swirl down the toilet bowl of leadership (or should that be shit to be pun worthy).

his* dry drunk (not so dry anymore if he* ever was to begin with), post coke addicted snort fest, god knows what else mentality is finally crashing into the brick wall of reality and he* can't handle the oh so real fact that he*s to face up to. he's* a colossal failure control freak that doesn't have the slightest fucking clue as to what he* is doing.

there are so many things I would like to say, but would be banned for saying them, that I will just state the obvious, he* needs to be impeached and not put in prison but put in an asylum. The man* is certifiably insane.

I am so filled with disgust and loathing for this pig* masquerading as a human being that it turns my stomach any time he* utters any sort of phrase that espouses "understanding" or "sympathy" for he* feels neither and is incapable of empathy.

In a word, he* is a sociopath.

Please, let justice prevail and free this nation from his* tyrannical rule.

61. Actually, this is a rational response by bushco - the war is making them billions
The war is a brilliant success to those who are making billions off the increased price of oil and the no-bid contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those are the same people who happen to be running the war.

OF COURSE they will "stay the course." It would be irrational for them not to, since the war has provided them with exactly what they wanted - power and wealth.

It would be irrational for anyone else to agree with them and fail to try to stop them.

Here is where, I believe, so many people go off in the wrong direction. They assume that * thinks the way that they do and is sincere, but this sincerity is marred by his being delusional, on drugs or alchohol, misdirected, misinformed, misguided, or even deceitful. But actually, he is just "don't give a shit." He sees a poll, or anticipates a confrontational question, and just turns to his scriptwriters with something akin to, "Spin me a response." Then goes about his business, which is the single-minded goal of staying in power.

79. Saying the American People support him is nothing new
From "the American People want their Prezdint rested & fit" to justify his many vacations, to "the American People know that Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction" to justify his war of lies... Shrub calls his OWN wishes ours. Tony Snow does it all the time. All the Repugs do it.

It drives me nuts. And it's wearing very thin now.

Otherwise, he wouldn't be sitting where he is. Let's say that "enough" of the public is with him. "Enough" of the American people voted for an idiot asshole, voted for his War and continue to do so (including Democrats). If he had less than a third of support, he'd be in jail by now.

89. On one hand we have Lieberman claiming anti-war legislation is "pandering to public opinion"
Which is now a no-no for politicians according to Lieberman. On the other we have president no-brains changing public opinion to what he wants it to be. In their own ways the both of them are equally insane.

90. I think the only crazy Bush is, is crazy like a fox, ...
Everyone on this board seems not to remember well beyond the start of the Iraq war the majority of people believed Saddam was behind 911. All Bush and Cheney had to do was twice a month make the statement and the press and television media trumpeted it far and wide, and it was so.

Watch for more statements like this to come out, I believe you are about to see a revisionist history in formation. Two days after the democrats folded on the with drawl time lines in the funding bill, Bush pops up in a news conference saying he wants to start the with drawl of troops within a year. Notice, after he had won the political victory over time lines, and after he had in the congressional records, the over whelming approval of bi-partisan funding. He made the democrats look weak and indecisive.

What he has done is re-captured the initiative on the Iraq war, controlling the timing not for total with drawl, but for strategic re-deployment of the majority of troops. Now everyone agrees the Republicans can not win in 08 if the war is and issue, but what if Bush makes it a non issue by re-deploying the troops out of harms way 3-6 months before the election, keeping them close but out of the 'bloody' headlines.

Then the democrats can't yell about a 'non issue war' they over whelmingly approved the start of, and continued to fund to the very end. It will be spun that the President knew when it was best to with draw and has done so. The democrats won't be able to comment on the elevated civil strife, because after all they wanted to desert the surge before it had a chance to minimize the aftermath.

Bush is crazy, crazy like a fox. Now watch him and the media machine convince the public he alone has found the best solution to the war, while silencing enough critics to keep the forum in doubt.

93. Well, this is a point on which he HAS to lie...
...as opposed to his usual reflexive lying. Bush-era Republicanism requires asserting the opposite of the truth as a bargaining tactic, and letting oneself be argued back to a merely right-leaning consensus.

But no, he's not this delusional; he's just lying again. As the consequences of his failures catch up, his claims must move farther and farther from reality.
