Sunnis revolt against al-Qaida
Source: Yahoo/AP

BAGHDAD - U.S. troops battled al-Qaida in west Baghdad on Thursday after Sunni residents challenged the militants and called for American help to end furious gunfire that kept students from final exams and forced people in the neighborhood to huddle indoors.

Backed by helicopter gunships, American forces joined the two-day battle in the Amariyah district, according to a councilman and other residents of the Sunni district.

The fight reflects a trend that U.S. and Iraqi officials have been trumpeting recently to the west in Anbar province, once considered the headquarters of the Sunni insurgency. Many Sunni tribes in the province have banded together to fight al-Qaida, claiming the terrorist group is more dangerous than American forces.

They said the fighters drove through the streets using loudspeakers to claim that Amariyah was under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq, an al-Qaida front group.

Armed residents were said to have resisted, set some of the al-Qaida gunmen's cars on fire and called the Americans for help.

2. What liberal bias
This article prooves that the liberal bias in the media is bullshit. I'm really sick of hearing Republican whining on this issue.

6. No, they aren't our best buddies
and probably will never be but the AQ boys made #1 on their shit list it appears. The locals seem to have gotten tired of AQ blowing up or assassinating members of the tribes so now AQ folks are becoming bullet catchers. Could'nt happen to a nicer bunch imo..

10. Actually the new poster is correct
Sure the Sunni's hate us, but they hate Al Qaeda more for the time being. Americans kill Iraqi civilians and more often than not it is an accident, AQIZ kills Iraqi civilians and more often than not it is on purpose. After a period of time the Sunnis can tell the difference ya know..........

11. How do you know this?
Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 04:17 PM by bemildred
You talk about AQ in iraq as though it was the Elks Club or something. How do you even know that it is a coherent enough entity to talk about what it does or what the Sunni think about it? I think it is a bullshit media construct, and unless someone offers me some facts to indicate otherwise, I will continue to believe that ALL media blather about its intentions and actions and properties are bullshit too, and the same applies to the "Sunni Tribes" and all this other crap. Even if some sort of truth lies behind this bullshit, it is not remotely as simple as its being portrayed.

13. Well I could say I had two tours of duty in Iraq working in a
Brigade S-2 shop, i.e Intelligence, I could say that from experience with Iraqis, that yes they do not like us at all, but they dislike Al qaeda more than us for the time being. I could tell you a lot of things, but you already have your mind made up, so there is no point in telling you that yes AQIZ has made enemies among the sunni tribes. Hey enjoy your little constructed world, I'll stay here in reality.

18. Who is speaking up for all Iraqis??
I'm just relaying that the new poster was in this one case correct, that at one particular place at this particular time Sunni arabs hate AQIZ more than us. Why are you putting words in my mouth, making baseless insinuations bout what I said, and generally acting like an ass to anyone that believes it just might be possible that for one second in one place we might not be the most hated. I know from my experiences in Iraq that the battlefield is constantly changing, some times we are the greatest enemy to the Iraqis, sometimes it is the Mehdi Army and sometimes it is Al Qaeda. This time for the time being the Sunni tribes appear to want to cooperate with us to get rid of AQIZ, I certainly hope you are not implying that this is not possible.

21. From my experience,
from my email correspondences with my friends on duty in Iraq right now, and from the media, both the mainstream media and the new media, it appears that for the time being sunni arabs in several locations hate AQIZ more than they hate the US. If you haven't seen evidence of this from roaming the internetz, I can't help you.

Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 05:24 PM by bemildred
And it may well be the case that some of the other people they hate use the name AQIZ. But I don't think you can generalize much from that.

through the Saudis, so they can fight the Sunni "terrorists". I swear this came out a few weeks ago, I'll look for a link.

Bill

Edit: My bad, we are funding Al-Qaeda linked Sunnis to fight Iran.

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/02/28/150251

So let's see, we support the elected government of Iraq, Shiites linked to Iran, and we are funding and fighting Al-Qaeda Sunnis, plus we are fighting alongside non-Al-Qaeda Sunnis. Did I get it straight?

26. Yes, we are funding the Sunnis and
we are funding the Shias. Pressure from SA to fund the Sunnis. It is insane at this point, but I don't doubt the Iraqi people are getting sick of it.
