29. Worse yet from all the following whoopdeedoo posts the tighter the noose the more desperate the
Criminals will work to cover up or divert attention from the original one! Look at how looney shrub's been talking now ready to do a melt down beware of the cornered & trapped dog he might have rabies and bite you. But seriously STAY OFF SMALL PLANES just ask Sen. Wellstone.
www.youtube.com/?v=3Vbf49kzWFw

Paul Wellstone was the only progressive in the U.S. Senate. Mother Jones magazine once described him as, "The first 1960s radical elected to the U.S. senate." He was also the last. Since defeating incumbent Republican Rudy Boschowitz 12 years ago in a grassroots upset, Wellstone emerged as the strongest, most persistent, most articulate and most vocal Senate opponent of the Bush administration.

In a senate that is one heartbeat away from Republican control, Wellstone was more than just another Democrat. He was often the lone voice standing firm against the status-quo policies of both the Democrats and the Republicans. As such, he earned the special ire of the Bush administration and the Republican Party, who made Wellstone's defeat that party's number one priority this year (2002).

Then he died.

Wellstone now joins the ranks of other American politicians who died in small plane crashes. Another recent victim was Missouri's former Democratic governor, Mel Carnahan, who lost his life in 2000, three weeks before Election Day, during his Senatorial race against John Ashcroft. Carnahan went on to become the first dead man to win a Senatorial race, humiliating and defeating the unpopular Ashcroft posthumously. Ashcroft, despite his unpopularity, went on to be appointed Attorney General by George W. Bush. Investigators determined that Carnahan's plane went down due to "poor visibility."

38. It will always be to my discredit,
although I like to think of myself as politically aware and up-to-the-minute on the news, that I didn't really know much about Wellstone while he was still alive. I'm afraid that, living in Georgia, I'll never have the opportunity to vote for someone like that.

56. Yes, Paul Wellstone was awesome
...but his protege Russ Feingold has taken up his mantle. Because of him, the Senate does still have a progressive voice, and a real mensch who doesn't back away from his principles!

127. Franken Will Lose Because...
a)He's for keeping the troops in Iraq. The peace community is already pissed at newly minted Senator Amy Klobuchar for voting for the blank check war funding this last week. Franken won't be able to crawl away from his continuing support of the war and a pissed progressive wing of the DFL.
b)He's a hot head and will lose his shit at some point. Many in Minnesota politics have already seen this - many times. Combined with the crying-at-the-drop-of-a-hat and this ain't a good combination.
c)He does have opposition in the form of deep pocketed Mike Ciresi and possibly (though no confirmation) peace guru Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. Pallmeyer is a better public speaker than Franken.

Stick to writing Al, you're great at it and can continue to use the popularity to fundraise for others.

47. I bumped into John Conyers recently
at the Detroit airport.

I was up there for a conference, and we went to the airport to pick up some friends. As we're standing on the curb outside the terminal, who comes walking by but John Conyers, by himself, holding his own bag. "Hey, Rep. Conyers!" I say. He turns and smiles, and speaks with us for a bit. He's looking for his driver. "You're doing a great job! Keep up those hearings!" Oh, we will, he assures us. Later he finds his driver, and my friend informs him that he's "the only good one." He laughs. Thoroughly down to earth.

This was three weeks ago, btw. I don't think he flies private jets. Strictly commercial, in other words.

From maddezmom's thread here in LBN:

Source: AP

WASHINGTON - Dan Bartlett, one of President Bush's most trusted advisers and his longest-serving aide, said Friday he is resigning to begin a career outside of government.

The move was announced on Bartlett's 36th birthday. He has been with Bush for nearly 14 years, from Bush's first campaign as governor of Texas, through two races for the White House and more than six years of a presidency marked by costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and an ongoing battle against terrorism.

As counselor to the president, Bartlett has been at the center of White House decision-making, stepping into the public eye in times of trouble to defend Bush on everything from the unpopular war in Iraq to the government's bungled response to Hurricane Katrina and the Republicans' loss of Congress.

104. I would be surprised if they don't fire him.

They might not because it would look too suspicious. But after dismantling the GOP in Illinois, Fitz has now set his sights on the Democratic Party in Illinois. And, of course, too many elected Democrats in this state are giving him all he needs. They amazingly seem to think they won't get caught like the Republicans did.

Actually, I think the Governor is going to come out clean (incompetent, but cleanly so). There is little doubt the guy he put in charge of contracting out state work is as crooked as they come. But did he know that when he hired the guy? Given that one of the first things he did as Governor was to shut down an illegal dump that had been operated under the Republicans for years by one of his in-laws, he would seem to be serious about trying to run a clean administration, even if that means taking on members of his own family.

Of course, the problem with shutting down that dump is that now all we ever hear in Illinois is that his in-law was operating an illegal dump. Nevermind we only know this because he ordered it closed. No good deed goes unpunished in politics.

151. Mike if a Democratic President gets elected they are gone for
sure...That's standard.

But what would be interesting is this...if the Fired attorneys felt that what was being asked of them was illegal and they wouldn't do it..

What did the attorneys that didn't get fired do? What laws did they break, who contacted them and put pressure on them and finally what innocent people were caught up in this whole caging crime?

The attorneys should be investigated and prosecuted if crimes occurred.

Welcome to DU!:hi:

From the Seattle Times today, far down in the article.

Tim Griffin, a Karl Rove protégé who was appointed by President Bush to replace the ousted U.S. attorney in Arkansas, declined to comment on reports that he is talking to the campaign about a top-level post. The Justice Department announced late Wednesday that he will be resigning his current position Friday. Griffin served as research director for the Republican National Committee in 2004.

So, I'm gonna try.

Some one said that Conyers was keeping his powder dry, so here's hoping he's taking it out soon.

I wonder if Rove knows exactly what emails Greg has. Congress needs to get another Special Prosecutor on this case.

Good job, as usual, Brad.

24. Avoiding Senate confirmation of griffin makes more sense now, but did they
slip the Patriot Act provision in about or around the time of the 2004 election? If they did then perhaps that might explain the plan to commit voter fraud was well thought out in advance, it was, and that the provision slipped in to allow DOJ to appoint USA's without confirmation had nothing to do with terrorism and every thing to do with an orchestrated plan to subvert the 2004 election.

Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 03:16 AM by blogslut
...was a factor in Griffin's leavng his USA post to spend time with Andy Card's Fred Thompson's family?

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/05/24/rove-fielding-pay-mysterious-visit-to-capitol/

I wouldn't put to past Karl to have been playing informer all this time. Maybe that's what's been keeping his ass out of jail and out of the public courts.

32. You coud very well be right. Arlen Specter's seemingly gratuitous comment
notwithstanding--it might well have been Arlen's way of throwing the dogs off the scent. You don't get as senior as Arlen by being stupid, certainly.

I say this because Arlen is on the Judiciary Committee, and if they were giving out immunity on the QT, he'd be the second person anyone would ask. But if he plays the "Duhhhh" card, it might put an otherwise intrepid reporter off the urge to ask him a question....

“Senior White House aide Karl Rove and White House Counsel Fred Fielding were just spotted leaving a meeting room just off the Senate floor in the Capitol. But neither gave a reason for their trip to the Hill. Minutes later, Iraq War ‘Czar’ Lt. Gen Douglas Lute was also spotted leaving the Capitol. When asked what brought him down Pennsylvania Avenue, Rove remained mum, simply smiling and greeting the staffers who quickly surrounded him. ‘Something big must be happening‘ a startled Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said as he watched Rove walk out the building.” May 24, 2007 9:51 pm |

Could it be, in actual fact, that Arlen really knows just what the "something big" is? Heck, nothing would surprise me at this point....

37. As much as Id like to get my hopes up
I still see Gonzales is smirking around the DOJ, still committing crimes without even a no confidence vote. Rice is still ignoring subpoenas, Rove is still lurking around the White House and Bush/Cheney are still gearing up for an attack on Iran. At this point I have no reason to believe this will be any different. A few show trials, refusal to hand over more emails, more outright disregard for subpoenas and in the end the criminals walk free.

Sorry for the pessimism but if recent history is any indication this will just be buried under the weight of lies, incompetence on the part of the dems and corporate disinformation. Seems to be working quite well for the Bush/Cheney crime family so far.

121. You may have misunderstood the article/headline...
The breaking news is not that Griffin resigned. It's that Griffin resigned AFTER CONYERS SOUGHT CAGING DOCS FROM THE BBC.

The rest of the breaking exclusive is in the article itself, including Conyers comments they are "are not done with Griffin" and cant' see how Griffin's scheme could have occurred without the knowledge of Rove, etc.

130. Yeah, I know, I had just pointed out Griffin resigned in the Newsnight programme thread
a couple of hours after the programme aired, in which Palast said Conyers had asked for the caging documents from the BBC (as several of us noted at the time). I do realise you might not have had Conyers' comments at that time, which was why you had to wait to publish, when we on DU could just link the two at once. That was why I put the grin in - I'm not suggesting we were doing proper journalism here. :)

Actor in a crime series who runs for president unknowingly hires a campaign manager who turns out to be involved with a major vote rigging scandal.

The campaign manager ends up floating face down in a swimming pool in a swank hotel after a GOP fundraiser.

Who dunnit?

The Actor/Candidate desperately trying to salvage his campaign?
The over the top sleaze bag presidential aide with a very big secret to hide?
The Actor/Candidate's much younger trophy wife who has secrets of her own?

Sounds like Emmy material to me.

I can't find anything on the BBC websites regarding this.

Tim Griffin, formerly right hand man to Karl Rove, resigned Thursday as US Attorney for Arkansas hours after BBC Television 'Newsnight' reported that Congressman John Conyers requested the network's evidence on Griffin's involvement in 'caging voters.'

See this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1006617&mesg_id=1007833

and in their Thursday programme, they briefly observed that Griffin had resigned shortly afterwards. Newsnight is a more in depth programme than the main BBC news operation, so the stories it runs aren't always found on the main BBC bulletins and web pages.

doings in the Plame trial that went by the wayside it made me sick. THEY ALL LIED, bush** Cheney, the whole god damn bunch. So what do we end up with? A friggin' expendable flunky who idolize the Supreme Evil One and was willing to take a bullet for him.

Then when Wolfowitz gave that interview (I forget in what magazine) that they picked the WMD excuse for invading Iraq because 'it was one everyone could get behind' I thought for sure that somebody would be in some deep doo doo. Nope, a liar admits lying and what does he get? A friggin' cushy job (that he eventually screwed up by lies and being sneaky). I mean with Wolfie I'm starting to see a pattern. In all of them there's a pattern of corruption that is so blatant is makes our poor country look like some third-world banana republic.

And how about torture? And how about Gonzo? How many lies has that crazy bastid been caught in? And how about...

Well, you get my drift. And you don't want me to start on our own party and the way they've sold us down the river.

Want to see Karl Rove frog marched? Here's your challenge...

from gregpalast.com , and his excellent article on Goodling and the Keys to the Kingdom:

"(Monica) Goodling testified that Gonzales’ Chief of Staff, Kyle Sampson, perjured himself, lying to the committee in earlier testimony. The lie: Sampson denied Monica had told him about Tim Griffin’s “involvement in ‘caging’ voters” in 2004."

We should be safe to assume if Congress would subpoena Tim Griffin there would be a good chance he'd plea bargain a felony conviction, and spill the beans on Rove if the orders to cage minorities came from Karl.

Your challenge? Contact your reps (both Senators and congresscritter) to read the emails Greg Palast gave to John Conyers. The legwork is done my friends. It's up to us to push it through. Greg Palast cannot do it all by himself. As of this morning there were at least 3 threads on the greatest page regarding Greg's work. If you've yet to read it, please go here:

http://www.gregpalast.com/index.php

If anyone has the tollfree number to congress, please post it below. I called using my daytime minutes on my cellphone today to D.C. I didn't want any delay if my representatives happen to be in DC now. If you live in a red state, or district please contact a member or two of the Congressional Black Caucus with this info. You can find a member here: http://www.house.gov/kilpatrick/cbc/member_info.html

Let's start with subpoena's for Kyle Sampson and Tim Griffin. Karl Rove should follow.

114. Slowly, the Ozark Stonewall of Myriad Deception is Crumbling
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 02:56 PM by L. Coyote
First, the DoJ issue seemed to have a "voter fraud" spin.

Carol Lam had zero, zip, nada to do with voter fraud.
In her case, another excuse had been spun out to confuse, the
coyote issue, initially called illegal immigration. The Rs in the
Goodling hearing was the first usage of "coyote" I noted. Rep. Issa
was the one who leaked false info on Carol Lam before the Cunningham
case saw the light of public press. This timeline needs more review. But,
the digging deeper led to Medicare fraud when the Missouri firing came out.

5/06: Missouri attorney a focus in USA firings = Bradley Schlozman
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x832164

And there was a ton of spin in the "voter fraud" direction that did not
fit very well. Yes, there was the actual case of four individuals being
charged. It was such a stretch to think that this was going to alter
the result of the Presidential election; compared to the Ohio purges,
long lines, vote-switching, recount fraud, and long list of shenanigans,
the "firing" of the Missouri USA attribution to voter fraud seemed spin-ish.

And, there were some really big fish and big $$$$$$$ in the Missouri corruption pond.
In fact, the public corruption fishing hole everywhere seems to be the biggest pond.
Governor Matt Blunt tried to prevent the USA's office from investigating his
family's scandals by putting the wife of USA Todd Graves on the Blunt Family payroll
to the tune of a cool half million dollars a year, and he used taxpayer dollars to do it.
It was reported that USA Todd Graves and his family will personally benefit from no-bid
state contracts valued at more than $3.6 million given by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt.

Another connection came to light in Missouri, the investigation of Medicare fraud.
In both Missouri and California, Tenet Healthcare was a target bilking billions.

5/09: US Attorney Firing: Voter Fraud, Medicare Fraud, WHICH IS IT ???
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x853813

Suddenly, instead of "four" activists being indicted just before an election, the number
had jumped to "five" to "six" billion dollars in fraud agains hospitals and taxpayers.
Also suddenly, the number of USAs involved in the investigation jumped to "thirty."

5/13: 30 U.S. attorneys investigate BILKING BILLIONS, Medicare, Medicaid, Military’s Healthcare
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x877011

And 50 USAs wanted to investigate the oil industry and price gouging!!
Other big numbers fit into the puzzle and connect surprising pieces.
Hundreds of millions of dollars in lobbying spent by single entities, billions spent by sectors!!
Now we are really talking about some very big fish in the pond. They tip the scale.

This is a complex story. Are whoopers still being spun by big fish, pointing to little fish?

In the closing weeks of Missouri's tight 2006 U.S. Senate race, the U.S. attorney in Little Rock, Ark., took the unusual step of revealing that his office's investigation into possible state government contracting abuses in Missouri had found no evidence of wrongdoing by Republican Gov. Matt Blunt. .......

150. Facts on Abramoff contributions to RPA (Republican Party of Arkansas)
Abramoff web reaches into Arkansas
Submitted by Arky Sue on January 7, 2006 -
http://securingamerica.com/ccn/node/3546

From the Democratic Party of Arkansas:
Facts on Abramoff contributions to RPA (Republican Party of Arkansas)

* The RPA has admitted to receiving a $10,000 contribution directly from Jack Abramoff ....
* The $10,000 contribution by Abramoff to the RPA is the single-largest payment ever by Abramoff to a state party ... gives his name as Ambramoff..
* Abramoff listed his employer and occupation as president of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians...
* The RPA also received two contributions from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. A $30,000 contribution ...Another ...of $25,000...
* For the ...$25,000, the RPA did not print the full name of the Mississippi tribe. ...
* ... the Mississippi Choctaws gave $105,970 during the 2001-2002 election cycle to the state Republican parties of Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia, Mississippi and New Hampshire. ...$65,000 of that had gone to Arkansas ...
* The $65,000 from the Mississippi tribe and Abramoff represents over 61% of all the money ($105,970) given by the tribe to state parties...
* Abramoff pled guilty... to conspiring to defraud and to defrauding the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians of millions of dollars. ...
* Abramoff was personally involved in directing large-dollar contributions from the Mississippi Choctaws to Republican candidates and committees. ... $25,000 to the Republican National Committee on behalf of the Mississippi Choctaws....
* ... Tim Hutchinson’s name has appeared in documents ... he was one of only eight members/former members of Congress who were to receive free meals at Abramoff’s DC restaurant... Hutchinson’s name appeared on a list of 18 lawyers... “FOO Comp,” for friend of owner,.... as does former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay....
* Abramoff pled guilty... illegally providing free meals ... to public officials “in exchange … for official acts and influence and agreements to provide official action and influence.” ...
* ...Tim Hutchinson received $8,000 from Abramoff and related entities

Key Questions:

* Who solicited the $65,000 in contributions from Abramoff and the Mississippi Choctaws on behalf of the Republican Party of Arkansas? ....
* Why does Tim Hutchinson’s name appear on a short list of eight lawmakers....?
* Did Hutchinson receive free meals in violation of Senate and Federal ethics rules and laws?
* Why is Tim Hutchinson not answering questions?
* Has he been contacted by Department of Justice investigators?
* Is he under investigation himself?

....: Tim Hutchinson is the brother of Asa Hutchinson (who is running for Gov ...

It sure wasn't because a "vote caging" expert was needed to prosecute voter fraud!!

155. KARL ROVE at work? Uncovering the Arkansas AND Missouri USA Firings?
FROM: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1065158&mesg_id=1065158

Karl Rove at work?
Max Brantley on June 7, 2007 03:49 PM
http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/2007/06/karl_rove_at_work.aspx

... Robbyn Tumey was planning to run as a Democrat for the legislature from Benton County in 2006. She withdrew after her construction company was indicted in Missouri over wage-and-hour law violations that she believed had been settled three years earlier.

I'll let a filing in federal court tell her story. But it includes the Hutchinson clan of Northwest Arkansas, which had reason to want to punish Tumey, and also a prosecutor from Missouri now hip-deep in allegations about misuse of the Justice Department for political purposes --particularly to punish Democrats. Tumey is one unabashed Democrat. And she's not going quietly in this case.

Read her pleading here (http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/tummeycase.doc). Interesting. She wants to know, among others, about communications between Asa Hutchinson when he was a Deputy Secretary at Homeland Security and the Justice Department. ... Was there an abuse of prosecutorial discretion to mount a prosecution in Arkansas at a time disadvantageous to a Democrat in Republican Northwest Arkansas and also perhaps benefit a well-connected Republican running for higher office and desperately in need of stoking up his base? ....

NEWS RELEASE

On Tuesday attorneys for the defense in the matter of United States of America vs. Managed Subcontractors International, Inc., et al. (No. 06-03084-01-03-CR-S-GAF) filed a supplemental motion for a bill of particulars requesting the full disclosure of communications between former Undersecretary of Homeland Security Asa Hutchison and former U.S. Attorneys Bradley J. Schlozman and Todd Graves, and any other Department of Justice staff that may have communicated about the prosecution of Managed Subcontractors, Inc. (MSI), which is headed by a Democratic official.

......

MSI president and CEO Robbyn Tumey, a longtime political activist and chair of the Benton County Arkansas Democrat Central Committee at the time of the indictment, was forced to drop her bid for an Arkansas state House seat weeks before the November 2006 election as a result of the charges filed against MSI and Ms. Tumey’s son, Brentt Tumey. Tuesday’s motion by the defense outlines a chronology of events leading up to the June 2006 indictment that shows how Bradley Schlozman’s actions in the federal criminal investigation were politically motivated. ....
