Rice: Cuba near 'major transition'

MADRID, Spain - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Cuba is on the verge of a "major transition," and chided Spain for not doing more to support dissidents in the communist nation, in comments made Friday while en route to talks with Spanish leaders.

Rice's one-day visit here was meant to smooth over a three-year downturn in relations between Washington and Madrid, but the disagreement over Cuba has threatened to wash away any growing good will. At issue is Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos's decision to snub Cuban dissidents on a visit to Havana in April, a move that has earned Washington's ire.

Moratinos has defended the move, saying engagement with Cuba is the best policy.

"There is a major transition coming in Cuba, and I think democratic states have an obligation to act democratically," Rice said before touching down in Madrid, alluding to the lingering health problems of 80-year-old Cuban President Fidel Castro.

condi, I have never ever had an original idea ever, rice once again, like most things she babbles about, just doesn't get it.

If she took off her shit colored glasses and have a real look at Cuba, she will see that Cuba has already gone through a massive transition. It happened when the soviet union imploded and they had to basically survive on their own with little to no oil.

They now have a sustainable economy. if anything this jackass mouthbreathing wanna be rice should realize, if there is a major transition coming it's for the U.S. when the price of oil gets so high that we are going to be so completely and throughly screwed that she will be lucky to be able to get any shoes at all.

7. They are working on building a sustainable economy.

Cuba's big blunder previously was allowing itself to serve as sugar plantation to the "world socialist community." By doing so, it kept itself in a neo-colonial economic status, no matter the "socialist" covering. Then, of course, that ended and there was no market any more.

I'm afraid Cuba isn't focused enough on diversifying its productive capacity, though it is good they are working on decreasing energy intensity of production. Building good infrastructure is key. Cuba could use a lot of new housing as well.

Cuba did in fact have a 'major transition', on Jan. 1, 1959, to be exact. It was a transition from state-monopoly, gangster-capitalism, designed by USA, and transformed into a real democratic society which is socialist in nature. And BTW Cuba will continue to be a socialist republic long after Condi has become a senile vegetable like Reagan and a gravestone is sitting on top of her thoroughly-decomposed body.
