Tropical Storm on first day of Hurricane Season
Source: MSNBC. com, Weather.com

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Barry formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday — the first day of hurricane season — and the National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for a stretch of Florida's western coast.

The storm was about 320 miles southwest of Tampa about 5 p.m. ET and was moving north at around 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph. Forecasters expected Barry to turn east and increase in speed over the next day, though no significant change in strength was anticipated before possible landfall.

"We're not looking for a hurricane," said Dave Roberts, a specialist at the National Hurricane Center.

As I said this morning,

Happy Hurricane Season. Looks like it's head our way toward the Tampa Bay area.

4. I'll take all the rain we can get right now.
Screw that wind. But, that would be a tornado, wouldn't it?

2. The fact there was a named storm
before the official start of hurricane season may have more importance, however.

11. yes -- it's uncommon to have one in early May
There are tropical storms on record that formed in April (2003) and even earlier -- even hurricanes. But not that many.

The forecaster cited in this piece says that global warming will likely show up in "a trifecta" of variables -- "frequency, duration and strength". But I've noticed that people looking at drought and wildfire conditions are already talking about changes to the shoulder seasons for their stuff, so it's not out of the question that we might see earlier and later storm formation as well, if the sea surface temps heat up enough.

5. So far just nice rain, very little wind. 3 power outrages
One yesterday when a hawk landed on a power line at the plant. A surge this morning when the weather was nice....and an outage this afternoon for no reason. Just light rain no wind.

That is tiring.

10. Yes, but this one looks Very good and hopefully very wet!
The current storm track shows it heading directly toward the the S. Georgia/N. Florida Fire! If this thing does drop a bunch of rain, it might just knock out the fire!

AND! Barbara (in the Pacific) is heading right toward a bunch of fires in Mexico too!
