BAGHDAD, June 2 (Reuters) - U.S. jets and helicopters circled over Baghdad amid the sound of explosions and heavy machinegun fire on Saturday evening, residents said.

A Reuters journalist saw at least one air-to-ground missile streak through the air before hitting the ground with a bang and a large flash.

The military activity appeared to be centred around the Shi'ite stronghold of Sadr City in northeastern Baghdad, the residents said.

Iraqiya state television said U.S. warplanes were bombarding Habibibya, an area in Sadr City.

5. Another quiet evening in Baghdad. The surge goes well.
:sarcasm: :sarcasm:

Seriously, this story has an all too familiar ring to it,
like when U.S. forces search for a kidnapped soldier or
the missing contractors. Not good.

BAGHDAD, June 2 (Reuters) - U.S. jets and helicopters circled over Baghdad amid the sound of explosions and heavy machinegun fire on Saturday evening, residents said.

A Reuters journalist saw at least one air-to-ground missile streak through the air before hitting the ground with a large flash.

The military activity, which by 1945 GMT appeared to have died down, seemed to be centred around the Shi'ite stronghold of Sadr City in northeastern Baghdad, the residents said.

Iraqiya state television said U.S. warplanes bombarded Habibibya, an area in Sadr City.

Residents told a Reuters journalist in Sadr City there had been casualties and that U.S. troops had cordoned off Habibibya. This could not be independently verified.

10. How many more children will we have killed by the end of the day?
There is just nothing else to say. And I'm complicit too - I think anyone, including me, who is not willing to stand in the street until this stops is also gradually being soaked, drop by drop, in blood. Because nothing else will work.

Iraqi ministry official: U.S. warplanes bomb Sadr City
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Five people were killed and three others were wounded during a five-hour Iraqi army operation, backed by U.S. forces, conducted overnight Saturday in two districts of eastern Baghdad's sprawling Sadr City neighborhood, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official told CNN on Sunday.

According to the ministry official state-run Iraqiya TV, U.S. warplanes bombarded houses in Sadr City's Habibiya district.

Witnesses told CNN explosions could be heard in Sadr City and U.S. helicopters could be seen hovering overhead. In addition, U.S. warplanes, they said, were seen bombing houses.

When contacted while the operation was ongoing the U.S. military declined to comment, stating it does not comment on ongoing operations. Following the operation the military could not be reached immediately.

US helicopters thwart attack on Baghdad's Green Zone
03 Jun 2007 12:03:48 GMT

BAGHDAD, June 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Apache helicopters strafed
militants preparing to fire rockets into Baghdad's Green Zone, home
of Iraq's government and the U.S. embassy, and killed four gunmen,
the U.S. military said on Sunday.

The airstrike targeted militants southeast of Sadr City, a stronghold
of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army militia,
late on Saturday night.

The sprawling Green Zone is the most heavily protected area in the
capital, but it has come under increasing mortar and rocket attack.
The attacks have also become more accurate and deadlier.

A Reuters journalist saw an air-to-ground missile fired during
Saturday's operation in which jets also circled above amid the sound
of heavy machinegun fire and explosions.

18. Boggles the mind!
I try, but cannot imagine how it feels to have bombs dropped in a city I live in, it must be absolutely terrifying! What about the children and old people?

We are not told the truth about civilian casualties..... and why in the hell are we in the middle of a civil war and picking a sides?

This occupation is obscene and despicable and must be ended! Enough is enough! :kick:
