Turkey 'suicide raid kills three'

Three people have been killed in a suicide attack
on a military outpost in eastern Turkey, media and
police say.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the
attack in Tunceli, where Kurdish rebels are known
to operate.

The attack comes amid speculation Turkey may
launch an incursion into Iraq to tackle Kurdish
rebels following recent rebel operations inside
Turkey.

On Monday Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul told EU
officials Turkey had "every right" to take action
against rebels.

1. Turkey to submit report to U.N. on north Iraq
ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey will deliver a report to the United Nations this week spelling out its concerns about militant Kurdish separatists in Iraq and reaffirming its legal right to take action against them, an official said on Monday.

The news comes as Turkey reinforces its troops along the border with Iraq and the powerful army General Staff stresses its readiness for a cross-border operation to crush guerrillas of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

"Diplomacy first," said Monday's Sabah newspaper headline, saying the U.N. move prepared the legal and diplomatic ground for the possible military operation, which has already sparked alarm in the United States, Turkey's NATO ally.

The Foreign Ministry official told Reuters Turkey's permanent U.N. representative, Baki Ilkin, would hold talks with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this week.

"The terrorism incidents will be explained. A report will be presented concerning the explosives and weapons we have determined are coming (into Turkey) from northern Iraq," the official said.

Eight paramilitary killed in attack in eastern Turkey

TUNCELI, Turkey (Reuters) - At least eight Turkish paramilitary police
were killed when Kurdish militants attacked their headquarters in eastern
Turkey on Monday, security sources said, in the worst attack of its kind
in a year.

The attack, blamed on the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), came
amid speculation Turkey may send troops into neighboring northern Iraq
to crush Kurdish rebels based there, despite pleas from the United
States to avoid military action.

Three people thought to belong to the PKK drove into the gendarmerie
complex in the eastern province of Tunceli, opened fire and threw a
grenade, killing eight and wounding six more. One guerrilla was also
killed, the security sources said.

The gendarmerie is a paramilitary force responsible for security in rural
areas of Turkey.

ANKARA, Turkey - Kurdish rebels fired rockets and grenades at a Turkish military outpost Monday, killing seven soldiers in an attack that heightened tension at a time when Ankara has threatened military action against the rebels in northern Iraq.

The army sent helicopter gunships and reinforcements to Tunceli province in southeastern Turkey after guerrillas rammed a vehicle into the military post and opened fire with automatic weapons and rockets, local media reported.

Soldiers returned fire, killing the driver, the military said.

The attack came as Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul told European Union officials visiting Ankara that "we have every right to take measures against terrorist activities directed at us from northern Iraq."

5. Good grief, will someone get this under control!
I hope that those Turkish troops on the Iraqi border are more for domestic political effect than they are for international meltdown effect.

6. Turkey keen to attack Kurds in Iraq as Kurdish militant kills 8
ANKARA, June 4 (RIA Novosti) - Turkish foreign minister Monday defended his country's right to move into neighboring Iraq to destroy separatist bases there as eight soldiers died in the latest suicide bombing involving ethnic Kurds.

The suicide attack, which occurred at a Turkish checkpoint, killing at least eight soldiers and leaving six wounded, is the latest in a series of terrorist attacks allegedly carried out by Kurdish militants.

"We respect Iraq's territorial integrity but we cannot tolerate terrorist activities near our borders and on our territory," Abdullah Gul told an Ankara news conference after a meeting with EU officials.

The EU apparently has given tacit support for Turkey's plans for a large military operation in the Kurdish-populated northern part of Iraq against armed members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

7. Turkey (And Iran) Shelling Kurdish Iraq
The AP is reporting that 7 Turkish soldiers have been killed by a Kurdish PKK attack on their border post, an act which is certain to further ratchet up Turkish calls for a cross-border invasion to deal with the Kurdish terrorist problem that the Iraqi government and US occupation forces have been unwilling and unable to handle.

The AP also reports that artillery shelling into Iraqi territory has already begun - and that the Iranians have joined Turkey in co-ordinated shelling of Iraqi soil.

A pro-Kurdish news agency reported Monday that Turkish troops shelled a border area in northern Iraq for a second day in an attack on Kurdish rebels based there.

Abdul-Rahman al-Chadarchi, a spokesman for the Kurdish rebel group PKK, told The Associated Press by telephone that there had been artillery shelling from Turkey into Iraqi territory at dawn, and that there had been simultaneous shelling from the Turkish and Iranian sides on Sunday night.
