Giuliani: Campaign sent article tying Mitt to a Mormon legend
Source: The Salt Lake Tribune

Article Last Updated: 06/05/2007 12:13:53 AM MDT

WASHINGTON - Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's campaign apologized Monday for circulating a Salt Lake Tribune story that raised a question about whether Mitt Romney would fulfill a disputed Mormon legend about saving the Constitution in the last days.

The Giuliani campaign had distributed The Tribune story to some bloggers, prodding Romney's campaign to balk at whether Giuliani was attempting to make Romney's LDS religion an issue in the campaign.

"I sincerely hope that the Giuliani campaign did not send that e-mail out to reporters in an effort to provoke questions about a fellow candidate's faith," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said in a statement. "They may have just been passing it along for other reasons, but given the focus of the article, they should be more careful since it could very easily be seen as an effort to question Governor Romney's faith. An action like that would be terribly disappointing."

Giuliani's campaign quickly backed off, however, calling the distribution of the story "a regrettable mistake."

Giuliani's deputy campaign director, Katie Harbath, distributed the story Monday morning in an e-mail to bloggers, according to The
New York Sun, which obtained a copy of the message. "Thought you'd find this interesting," Harbath reportedly wrote.

1. So that's where the hell the story came from.
Seemed strange to me at the time.

2. the tribune posted the article, then Rudy's campaign used it
obviously to question his faith. It's a strange story to say the least, but Mitt says he doesn't agree with the prophecy.

12. Easier to apologize than ask permission
It is the dirty tricks that Rove uses like the push-poll of McCain and a Black baby in the Carolinas.

3. Not to attack Mormons but
I have a book documenting atomic testing in the US. In that book it shows documents detailing why certain test sites were chosen. One of the sites, south of St. George, Utah was chosen based on the the beliefs of Mormon's not to question government authority. They have never protested the testing that was done on them in the late 40s, early 50s.

Through a FOI the author was able to get documents showing that the government chose the location based on it's Mormon population and their unquestioning faith in the government. St. George, Utah has had the highest Leukemia and thyroid cancer rates since the testing. Interviews with the "survivors" show that to this day they will not complain or protest the "testing" done on them.

Wonderful Bush supporters all.

p.s, I know my post is next to worthless without my source. I have the book but it's late and I just don't want to dig around the bookshelves. It's actually a photographic journey through America's test sites, a trip I've been taking for years. If you ever want to see desolation go to Atomic City, ID near Mountains of the Moon. The first atomic powered city that was left to die when the government had no further use for it.

4. If these people are going to be wearing the religion on their sleeves
we are fully justified in targeting the basic tenets of their faith.

7. Its not even a tenant of the faith
The "White Horse Prophecy" that they are talking about is a legend at best - its not part of LDS doctrine or beliefs of the Church. When I was a missionary I heard the "Prophecy" over and over, however it is not taught in the church - members may talk about it like gossip - however its not doctrine or recognized in anyway by the church.

5. Only a stupid candidate wouldn't make his religion an issue.
It's reprehensible on one level, but a large segment of the US population doesn't know or doesn't trust Mormonism. To not allude to certain things would be foolish.

6. Wonder why people don't. It's because they aren't educated.
Furthermore, most fundlementalist are discourged from learning about other religions and think Mormans are devils or something. Let's not forget how they helped those wagon train people on their way west. You can bring up the massacre of Sept 11 but regular christians are guilty of killing entire villages of Native Americans.

8. A stupid candidate also gets caught red handed making said religion an issue
If you're going that route you have the attack carried out by surrogates or shit spread it around the internet. You don't have direct involvement otherwise you just wasted your attack.

As far as morals go, I find it rephrensible but this ain't tiddly winks.

11. I think Romney's religion SHOULD be an issue.
The Mormons are creepy. There I said it.

They are a cult/mafia.

Did anyone else see that recent PBS special about Mormons? I didn't think anything could make me lose more respect for that "religion", but that program did.

14. I disagree
There are so many things in Mitt's record that are much worthier of attack. I had to suffer for 4 years with that asshole as Gov., if the repubs thought Kerry was a flip flopper, just wait until they get a load of Mitt!
