There has been a report of a tornado touching down just south of Stony Plain.

I think I saw it.

1. TV channels have gone to tornado safety warnings
They're telling people to get in their basements etc.

4. Stay safe, TrogL.
Just tried to get my relatives in Sherwood Park and no answer. Will keep trying.

Keep us updated! I've seen Alberta tornadoes in action. Scary!

5. No, they're not normal
Yes we're near an area called Tornado Alley but that's further south, and they generally occur further out, not right next to the city.

7. It's also way too early in the year
Tornado season is normally July-August - not the beginning of June.

10. We do get a few
Like the one that hit Edmonton in 1989(?), or the Pine Lake campground one in 2000. Both, naturally, significantly involved trailers.

Central Alberta is famous for hailstorms, some say it's the world capitol for hail. I'd believe it, more than once I've gone out into what was once a nice veggie garden that now smelled like a salad bar.

Here in Calgary, we just had a terrific thunderstorm, I just drove home thru plenty of flooded roads, lots of cars conked out in them. Lucky for me I have, uh, nice high ground clearance.
