Flight 93 Memorial Land in Dispute
Source: NY Daily News

A man who owns property at the site where Flight 93 crashed has demanded millions for his portion of land where a memorial is planned, and has installed a donation box to help pay for security.

The actions by Mike Svonavec have angered victims' families, who believe he is overcharging and disagree with the need for a donation box.

"That land has been paid for with 40 lives ... the donation box is an insult to that cost," said Patrick White, vice president for Families of Flight 93.

Svonavec wants $10 million for his 273-acre property in Somerset County, far more than the per-acre amount paid for nearby land, White said Tuesday. He said Svonavec told him about his asking price last July, and that he has rejected three offers from the group - the latest for more than $500,000.

"I think Svonavec believes his land, because it has the blood of my cousin and 39 other people, it's worth more," he said.

This is ridiculous.

3. Appropriate.
The GOP has made trillions for its wealthy owners in the name of 9/11. Why shouldn't others be allowed to get in the game?

11. Really?
When the coroner can't find any bodies and there are no aircraft pieces to be seen... like tail sections , chunks of titanium from the engine cores, etc... then you don't have a crash site. At least not one of a B757.

19. So where is the airplane?
Take a look at the aerial photographs! NO AIRPLANE! We sure set a lot of records on 9/11 with the first 3 steel framed buildings to EVER collapse due to a fire, jet fuel smelling like cordite at the Pentagon, and the first crash scene with a full 757 that almost completely vaporized into thin air along with all the bodies!

20. You obviously or intentionally, didn't look at the first set of pic's.
Parts of the cabin, a motor, the black box recorder, the flight recorder, guess you missed that part.

(jet fuel smelling like cordite )

That's a good one, i wonder how many people even know what cordite smells like and why would such a primitive form of explosive be used in this day and age. Cordite was used mainly for artillery weapons and it's production pretty much ended after WW2.

(first 3 steel framed buildings to EVER collapse due to a fire,)

Why is that so hard to believe. You are aware that the hotter steel get, the weaker it gets, aren't you?

(the first crash scene with a full 757 that almost completely vaporized into thin air along with all the bodies!)

Which crash scene are you talking about now? Pentagon or Pennsylvania?

Ignore my post if you chose, doesnt matter to me. But I suggest you open both eyes, when looking at these things.

14. Remember, Congress is paying $58 million to build a memorial there
He's asking like $35K per acre. I live in a rural area where that's about right for farmland.

15. Should be Paid What Land Was Worth Before the Crash
The man should be paid fair market value - based upon the value before the crash. This land is rather remote and rugged and was not exactly part of a hot market before the crash. He is now claiming that he is spending $10,000 a month for security - which is ridiculous. The National Park Service said there have been only a couple minor crimes in the area since the crash.

Remember that a conservative republican congressman from North Carolina held up the money for years that was proposed to buy this land.

(Here's another tidbit - another large part of the memorial area is owned by the family of the main State and local news reporter for the PA. public television network and the Harrisburg public radio station.)

17. i agree.
firstly I am bored with this country's memorial fascination. but if he doesn't want to sell his land for a monument, then he shouldn't be forced to. will a monument bring any of the dead back? will it actually make anyone feel better about it? will it teach a life lesson for anyone? be inspiring? i think not. it will be bland and boring and in ten years, no one will bother to pay any attention. it is a complete waste of government money, frankly, and if this guy wants to keep his land, or make enough to start over somewhere else, more power to him.

18. and speaking of this country's memorial fascination...
what's the whole deal with all these impromptu shrines and memorials- complete with crosses, candles, flowers and soggy teddy bears, every time somebody dies in a car accident? when did that crap start?

i sure as hell don't remember anybody doing it when i was growing up.
