Commander reports a Baghdad success
Source: UPI

WASHINGTON, June 6 (UPI) -- Security efforts in at least one small but notorious corner of Baghdad are going well, a U.S. military commander reports.

Col. Bryan Roberts, the commander of 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, has numbers to back it up. Not a single American soldier has been killed in the Karkh security district in south-central Baghdad since beginning the U.S. surge in early January. Subordinate units assigned to other parts of the city have lost 28.

In January there were 53 people murdered in Karkh; in May, just four. In January there were 87 attacks against his forces, including car bombs, roadside bombs, mortars, rockets and small arms fire. By May, that number had dropped by 60 percent.

"We often scratch our heads and say, how did this happen, ask ourselves how it happened, but you know, a certain degree of it may just be luck. But luck is obviously when opportunity meets preparation, and I think we have risen to the occasion," he told Pentagon reporters Tuesday.

... one neighborhood.

If the Neocons' plan was to turn America into an empty shell... well, mission accomplished. :(

4. So the people who were setting off the IEDs in Karkh are
now setting off IEDs elsewhere, and that's supposed to be a sign of progress? Total bullshit.

8. So the Commander is a bald-faced liar and the
reporter is either on the Bush payroll or completely incompetent. Shame on the UPI editors for not doing a simple fact check before releasing this piece of pure propaganda bullshit.

And thanks for taking the time to do their job.

9. yes, but those are Iraqi civilian bodies, so they don't count as "violence"
It has been well established that we regard Iraqi humans as less important than American pets.

11. By Col. Roberts' standards, I know a plan that can result in nationwide success
It's called "complete troop withdrawal", and I am confident that it will result in 100% reduction of American military casualties in Iraq after it is realized.
