Girl missing a year found hidden under staircase
Source: CNN

BLOOMFIELD, Connecticut (AP) -- A 15-year-old girl missing for nearly a year was found Wednesday locked in a small hidden room under the staircase of a couple's West Hartford home, police said.

Bloomfield police said they found the girl alive in a room blocked from view by a cabinet. They had gone to the home with West Hartford police to serve search warrants for DNA and other evidence.

Two people who live at the home were arrested. Adam Gault, 41, was charged with second-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree custodial interference, interfering with an officer, risk of injury to a minor and second-degree forgery. He was being held on $500,000 bond.

Ann Murphy, 40, was charged with conspiracy to commit second-degree reckless endangerment, conspiracy to commit second-degree custodial interference and risk of injury to a minor. She was held on $100,000 bond.

1. so it sounds like the couple were already somehow suspects...
...in her disappearance? Otherwise, I wonder why police were seeking their DNA. And did they have crime scene DNA to match it against, or were they maybe looking for the girl's DNA in the house, i.e. did they already suspect she was being held there?

7. These people should go away for a long, long time
How about locking them in a tiny room?

:grr:

Execution. That would be better.

8. I wonder where the forgery comes in?
There's more badness to this story than just what is apparent on the outside.

The poor girl.

10. Why did CNN put a picture and her name in the story?
I think they should have withheld that.

11. Notice where the photo was from
She was a reported missing person and the photo was from MissingChildrenBlog.com. It's not uncommon to show the photo of a missing person, even a child, when they are found.

12. They should stop doing that, there should be a law
After seeing what happened in terms of the Shawn Hornbeck charges I think they should no longer give out the names of minors when they are found. I don't care how high profile they are there is no reason they should be able to expose these children who have gone through so much.

Think of it, now everyone who knows some of these abducted kids also know they were sexually abused, tortured, and exploited. Is that something you would want everyone to know about you? (Let alone your young child)

13. There should be some form of regulation
But there isn't. Once the photo was made public it remains public. After that it's up to the media's ethics. Which quite often leaves much to be desired if there are ratings involved.
