Lakeland Electric Workers Vote to Unionize

LAKELAND — After repeatedly rejecting attempts to unionize over the years, Lakeland Electric workers welcomed the Utility Workers Union of America on Wednesday in a big way.

The vote to unionize was a resounding 190-112, a UWUA organizer said. Of the 326 workers eligible to vote, 302 did so. The list of people who will be represented in collective bargaining with the utility includes plant workers, linemen, instrument control workers and truck drivers.

You have to know the background to understand the importance of this vote. The word "union" has been a dirty word in these parts for way too long.
I say good for them.

I think people are getting the message now that they need each other.
