Punch flies on (Alabama State) Senate floor (Repub hits Dem)
Source: The Birmingham News

State Sen. Charles Bishop hit Sen. Lowell Barron on the floor of the Senate this afternoon, saying Barron called him an s...o...b.

The Senate was in recess when Bishop, a Republican from Arley, and Barron, a Democrat from Fyffe, started an animated conversation. Bishop suddenly hit Barron in the face, and Barron fell back onto a desk.

Patrick Harris, assistant secretary of the Senate, said he saw Bishop hit Barron and quickly grabbed Bishop and pulled him back.

Bishop in an interview later said Barron called him a s...o...b, so he hit Barron in the face.

17. God, we have lots of hills and mountains in Alabama!
Edited on Thu Jun-07-07 08:19 PM by Stuckinthebush
Take a look at a map...you'll see the Appalachian range extend all the way into Alabama with its terminus a little past Birmingham.

In fact, the whole Appalachian trail "Maine to Georgia" has been challenged for years to be extended to the actual terminus of the range which is in Alabama. I do believe there is a group that has been slowly purchasing land to do this.

Red Mountain in Birmingham was the site of major iron ore mining for years...in fact, that is how Birmingham became known as the "Pittsburgh of the South".

Alabama is absolutely beautiful...the north and north central sections have mountains and hills...the coast is gorgeous with white sand beaches. Yes, the plains aren't as exciting but they add to the beauty of the state.

When my wife moved here from South Carolina she kept remarking that there wasn't a flat yard in the entire city of Birmingham!

She was right.

So, Yes, Virginia, there are hills in Alabama!

:D

5. b/c if a Dem stood up and showed a bit of grit
they would be accused of 'not supporting the troops'. (regardless of the point of contention)
:eyes:
can't have that.

i'd vote for the one that smacked the phrase back down the throat of the accuser.

Yes, I think it's insane and terribly unprofessional, but I gotta tell ya, there have been times when I would have LOVED to see some of the Dems in the US Congress litterally smak down some of the arrogant Pubs! DeLay, McConnel, and several others come to mind!

10. Ala. Lawmaker Punches Senate Colleague
Simmering tensions in the Alabama Senate boiled over Thursday when a Republican lawmaker punched a Democratic colleague in the head before they were pulled apart.

Republican Sen. Charles Bishop claimed that Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron called him a "son of a (expletive)."

"I responded to his comment with my right hand," Bishop said. Alabama Public Television tape captured the punch.

Barron refused to comment and went into a closed-door meeting with other Democrats. Sen. Vivian Figures went into the meeting carrying first aid supplies, but she said he was not hurt.

At least, according to Cheney.

or maybe "go fuck yourself" is considered acceptable to Republicans, since they're all closet freaks anyway, but "s.o.b." violates their creationist beliefs?

Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 08:28 AM by catgirl
Source: AP

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A Republican state senator who punched a Democratic lawmaker in the head expressed regret, saying "that's not the way grown men solve their problems," but he said he won't immediately apologize.

Republican Sen. Charles Bishop claimed that Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron called him a "son of a (expletive)" in the Senate chamber on Thursday.

"I responded to his comment with my right hand," Bishop said.

Alabama Public Television tape captured the punch.

23. Ah, the Cheney apology. (version 2.1)
"I expressed myself rather forcefully, felt better after I had done it," Cheney told Neil Cavuto of Fox News. The vice president said those who heard the putdown agreed with him. "I think that a lot of my colleagues felt that what I had said badly needed to be said, that it was long overdue."

You can go here: http://www.al.com/ and look halfway down on the left side to find a video of the punch.

Apparently, the Pubbie couldn't make his point in any reasoned manner.

Good lord, I grew up in that miserable state - left, of course, but still. Look in the forums and you'll see a lot of little Pubbie pukes cheering their aging Tyson wannabe. What an embarassment.

him. He's very quick with his knee jerk reactions, completely unburdened by the need to deliberate about right and wrong.

35. Yesterday's News?
Well, yeah, in the sense that it happened yesterday afternoon. It's not the first time Charles Bishop has lost it on the Senate floor. He went after another Democrat earlier in the session, but security was able to pull him off before he landed any punches that time. He has a serious anger management problem and a bit of a persecution complex. He used to be a Democrat, but he changed parties a few years ago. Good riddance!

33. With all the talk yesterday about culture wars going from cold to hot, my bet is that this would be
a microcosm of what such a "civil war" would look like. The Right would brazenly and decisively attack the Left, and never offer an apology, and the Left, paralyzed by the show of force, would lie down and take whatever terms are dictated.

38. The Pukes are losin' it! They know their time is up. They've destroyed everything
that the better conservatives once held dear--fiscal responsibility, "small government," the Bill of Rights, the rule of law, caution about change, resistance to radical change, personal responsibility (how many times did Abu Gonzales say "I don't know, Senator"?), honesty, integrity, reluctance to engage in "foreign adventures," patriotism (how patriotic is it to outsource all the jobs to India?), and even environmentalism--conservation (from the word "conservative"), that is, the careful and conservative use of our nation's natural resources, which was a Republican cause (yup! --especially in California) before it was a Democratic cause. All gone! All bankrupt on the shoals of BushWorld!

So they strike out. Their stupidity and bankruptcy are showing. It is especially interesting to see it erupt in a former Democrat, who no doubt thought that he could gain advantage for his corrupt backers, and more personal power, by aligning with the Bushites. And now, one after another of these highly corrupt, toadying Bushite dudes are being exposed, find themselves highly vulnerable for their out-of-control thievery, unloved by the voters for their duplicity and irresponsibility, unprotected by toady Rovebots in U.S. Attorney's offices, and some of them in jail, or living in fear of jail--even high-placed corrupt toadies like Libby--thrown to the wolves by the tyrants in the White House. The rats gnawing on each other's skulls as they desert the sinking ship of the Republican Party.

Every truly Democratic candidate for every office in the land, from president to dog catcher, ought to use this video footage of the Republican punch as their campaign ad. "You want government that punches opponents, or lawful government?" It would make a great ad. It sums it all up.

And if we can somehow get real vote counting--and rid of ourselves of that Diebold/ES&S "punch"--we might just create ourselves a good country.
