Bruning jumps into 2008 race for Senate
BY ROBYNN TYSVER
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN - Republican Jon Bruning charged out of the gate today, throwing verbal punches at possible opponents in what likely will be a free-for-all U.S. Senate race in Nebraska.

Jon Bruning announcing his run for the Senate in the rotunda of the State Capitol.

Bruning, 38, is the first politician - Republican or Democrat - to formally enter the race. He made his announcement with about 75 family members and friends in the State Capitol Rotunda.

Bruning referred to incumbent Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel as a "carpetbagger" and chided him as "irresponsible" for raising the specter of impeachment in reference to President Bush.

"I'm a candidate without reservation. I can and I will beat Senator Hagel next spring," he said.

3. Carpetbagger...

... isn't Hagel a Nebraska native? Carpetbaggers are folks that are residents of "other states that are only "here" to make money"... ie, northern politicians/leaders that invaded the south after the civil war to make some fast bucks.
