Report: CIA used NATO nations as prison sites
Source: WP

PARIS -- The CIA exploited NATO military agreements to help it run secret prisons in Poland and Romania where alleged terrorists were held in solitary confinement for months, shackled and subjected to other mental and physical torture, according to a European investigative report released here Friday.

Some of the U.S.'s highest-profile terrorism suspects, including Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who is considered the prime organizer of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, were detained and interrogated at the facility in Poland, according to the 72-page report completed for the Council of Europe, the continent's human rights agency.

Dick Marty, a Swiss lawyer hired by the council, said the CIA conducted "clandestine operations under the NATO framework," providing military intelligence agencies in member countries including Poland and Romania the cover to assist the agency in disguising the use of secret flights, operations and detention facilities from just after 9/11 until last fall.

Officials speaking on behalf of the CIA, NATO, Poland and Romania criticized the report's findings. Poland and Romania have denied that the CIA established secret prisons on their soil.

1. Gee, if this guy really did do 9/11, why wouldn't France, Germany, Spain,
Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland or fricking England, jump at the chance to host his imprisonment and interrogation? "The whole world was America!" you will recall at the time.

Why whisk him off secretly to Romania or Poland? And for that matter, if this guy really did 9/11, why not announce it to the whole world and put his mug shot up there with the infamous double-identity hijackers? And why not outline the case against him and try to him?

Also, they were flying kidnapped prisoners (one can't really say they were "arrested") hither and yon all over the globe. Why keep him in these strange choices of countries? We have our own federal prisons, and if they wanted him off-shore for some reason (ahem, say to immunize his torturers from prosecution), they had Guantanamo Bay. Why keep him in "new" Europe?

Which brings me to my abiding question about Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, the secret prisons, torture, indefinite detention and the deaths in indefinite detention: What were war criminals Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld REALLY using these unlawful powers FOR? To "keep us safe"? Anybody think that that is their true motive in anything they do?

2. Your post is brilliant.
And I thank you for uplifting me on such a dark day. Every once in a while I see something that is revealing.

Why, indeed. Every American should have been asking these questions.

4. Ironic - Poland and Romania abused human rights in conjuction with the U.S.S.R.
Then did the same in conjunction with the U.S.

The more things change...
