NATO soldier killed in Afghanistan battle
Sat Jun 9, 2007 2:30PM EDT

KABUL (Reuters) - A NATO soldier was killed on Saturday in
combat in southern Afghanistan as the alliance launched an air
strike against leaders of the country's Taliban insurgency, a
NATO statement said.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
said four of its troops had also been wounded in the southern
battle with enemy fighters. It gave no more details.

"A precision air strike targeted several influential Taliban
leaders today in Helmand province," ISAF said in a separate
statement, referring to the southern province which has seen
some of the heaviest fighting so far this year.

It said the air strike represented a disruption to the Taliban
network in southern Afghanistan but did not say if any of the
targeted leaders had been killed.

1. British soldier killed in Afghan ambush
SANGIN, Afghanistan, June 10 (Reuters) - A British NATO soldier was killed and four wounded in battle at the weekend after a Taliban ambush near the southern Afghanistan town of Sangin, the British military said on Sunday.

The soldiers from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards were on patrol with Afghan troops when they were struck by a roadside bomb on Saturday, said Captain Alex Corbett-Burcher, an officer with British mentoring teams who work with Afghan troops.

"Following the explosion, the patrol came under sustained small arms and RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) fire from Taliban positions," he said.

"The patrol fought off the Taliban until reinforcements arrived, allowing them to extract the casualties from the damaged (Land Rover) while under fire from the Taliban."
