Kuwait says US cannot use bases for any Iran strike
Source: AFP

KUWAIT CITY (AFP) - Kuwait, a staunch US ally, said on Monday it would not allow the United States to use its territory as a launch-pad for any attack on Iran over its nuclear programme.

"The United States did not ask (to use Kuwaiti military facilities for any attack) and even if it did, we will not allow anybody to use our territory," defence and interior minister Sheikh Jaber al-Mubarak al-Sabah told reporters.

Kuwait served as the launch-pad for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and remains the main staging point for US-led troops in the country. Around 15,000 US troops are stationed at several bases in the emirate.

On Sunday, visiting Iranian parliament speaker Gholam Ali Hadad Adel said Tehran would hit US military bases in Gulf states if they were used in an attack on his country.

2. As incompetent as the US military under George Bush is, no one
should allow themselves to be set up as a proxy. The US is a stumble-bum giant, who can't pour piss from a boot. And war crimes, sooner or later, are going to come down, maybe Kuwait wants to get a little distance...

4. The only reason we saved their asses is because they are partners with the Bush/Saudi oil mafia.
We should have let Saddam keep the place and we would have $1 gas.

It's not like they are a democracy. Kuwait is still a dictatorship.

We went to war because the Bush mafia liked one dictatorship better than another.

If it was not for Bush's diplomatic fuck up, there never would have been an Iraq War I.

8. This is interesting.
It seems the Kuwaitis remember what happened in the early stages of the Iraq occupation.

The U.S., so confident and proud of itself, decided to use Turkey as a staging ground for the invasion into Iraq. Plans were drawn up. US troops were rounded up. Even Navy destroyers were sent out. I believe even the first troops arrived in Turkey, when the government said "Uh-uh, No you can't do that".

It was unbelievable, and few people realize how much chaos that created. The US had wanted to invade from the north, but was not unable to do so. We had to change everything and go in from the south. Don Rumsfailed was going through a meltdown, Paul Wolfowitz blamed the Iraq failures on the Turks.

Seems the Kuwaitis were paying attention.

9. Good Lord! Turkey would be the logical point of revanche had they been allowed!
Iran is about 1/4 the size of the contiguous US and has almost 80 million people! We aren't talking a little place far away about which we know little, we are talking Iran!
Invading Iran would be nearly impossible in the first place without a million man army just dedicated to that task and the casualties would be incalcuable on both sides. The revenge would be swift and on a level we never have imagined, it would be Marshal Zhukov heading into Berlin type stuff.

10. If we bomb Iran I'm leaving this country
that is if Bush isn't torn apart by an angry mob.

If this country can start two pre-emptive wars and that leadership still stays in power, then I'm abandoning this place and going to Canada.

or New Zealand.

This is the most depressing thought I've ever had. We are the enemy of the world. We bomb Iran and we deserve to be destroyed.

12. The price of a gallon of gas will skyrocket everywhere: worldwide
depression in sight. When everything, and I mean everything, depends on some sort of transport to get from the sellers' location to the buyers' locations, in the capitalist system, those major-extra-costs will be added to the retail prices everywhere, including Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, etc.

But, hey, that's what the oil olygarchy who owns the Republiklans (and a few Dems as well) want$.

They still think they'll be able to live normally with "our" billons (like they do today) while the entire world will collapse and die all around them! AH! What a bunch of totally criminal idiots!

We're all screwn (THEM included)!

11. Where are the voices that should be speaking out against an attack on Iran?
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 10:21 PM by IndianaGreen
The only ones in opposition to a US strike on Iran are the same peace and antiwar activists that have opposed the war since 2002.

Whatever the excuses and explanations we are hearing today from many politicians, we are in Iraq today because a lot of people from both major parties decided to go along with Bush on the war. One would think that getting burn on Iraq would have given our politicians a measure of caution when it comes to another war cry. Wrong!

The most disturbing thing about our political leaders, including some that are running for the Democratic nomination for President, is that rather than urging a cooling down of the rhetoric about Iran and challenging the warmongering of the likes of Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman, they have adopted bellicose language such as "all options are on the table" on Iran, including the nuclear option as the Pentagon is planning.

What are we to do?
