(UK) Tories lose Iraq war inquiry vote
Source: BBC

The Tories have failed in their bid to make Parliament hold an inquiry into the war in Iraq.

Shadow foreign secretary William Hague had told MPs ministers had "no adequate reason" to block an inquiry into the war's build-up and immediate aftermath.

But by a vote of 288 to 253, the Commons rejected the Tories' call.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said the issues would be explored "in the round" eventually, but not while UK troops were still in action in Iraq.

And since troops will be there for years to come, I don't think an inquiry will ever happen. It's something that should have happened before the invasion anyways.

And to think it was the Tory's idea. Weird.

Kicking for peace.

2. The reason it's the Tories' idea is to discredit the Blair government
To their political advantage - mind you, the Blair government deserves discredit!

Most Tories voted for the war.

3. Yes, the Tories are Grandstanding here.
Let us not forget that - with one or two honourable exceptions - the Tories were at least as gung-ho as the Blairites about Bush's War.

5. It's not the first time they've acted this way. But Labour should invite an iquiry.
That is the part I find weird. But then it's Blair who is the Bush poodle. I suppose there's nothing I don't understand. Look at the Democrats. Half of them are avoiding transparency of this war, too.

6. True, but at least they KNOW how to act like an opposition party.
Sometimes wish the Democrats would do the same.

7. "at least they KNOW how to act like an opposition party"
How come they all voted for the war then?

Regardless of the merits of an inquiry, this remains little more then grandstanding I'm afraid.
